Jed Adcock return boosts Brisbane Lions in AFL finals clash with Bulldogs

Andrew Hamilton | September 11, 2009 12:00am

HE'S BACK: Brisbane Lions star Jed Adcock is set to tackle the Western Bulldogs.

  • JED Adcock put himself through a gruelling solo pre-season style rehabilitation regime with daily training sessions in his desperate bid to return to the Lions side for the 2009 finals.
There was no radical treatment, just old-fashioned hard work that allowed Adcock to shave six weeks off his expected recovery time and force his way into the Lions' side for tonight's knock-out semi-final against the Bulldogs - it will be his first senior game since breaking his leg in the 43-point round 15 win over Geelong.

He has played just half a game in the reserves, just six weeks after the injury, but coach Michael Voss has no qualms about his fitness because of the extreme measures he underwent in order to regain and then retain his fitness while his leg healed.

He joins Josh Drummond and Tim Notting as one of three changes to the side that defeated Carlton at the Gabba last week.

"They are right to go," Voss said of Adcock and Drummond, who will both go into the game with question marks over their fitness despite the coach's brave face.

Jason Roe and Cheynee Stiller were dropped and Scott Harding was unavailable because of a foot injury.

When Adcock limped off the Gabba in round 15, the Lions thought he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, which would have ended his year and wiped out half of next season also.

But after extensive scans it was discovered he had broken a bone and would be recovered in time to join the side for pre-season training in October.

Once he heard he didn't require a knee reconstruction he was determined to shave time off his anticipated recovery period in a bid to join his teammates in the finals.
He returned in the reserves in round 21 and would have been on track for the round 22 clash with Sydney but pulled up sore and his comeback was temporarily delayed.

Voss last night downplayed any suggestions that selecting Adcock was a risk.

"It is not really a gamble, he is actually quite fit because he has been running around for quite a while," Voss said.

I'm just happy he finally gets to play a very well deserved finals match. I was gutted when he got injured and thought be would miss the season. Not any more!!

BRISBANE LIONS defender Jed Adcock and Adelaide onballer Michael Doughty are free to play the opening round of 2010 after the AFL's match review panel took no further action on strong tackles laid by the pair during last weekend's semi-finals.

Adcock's tackle of former teammate Jason Akermanis in the second quarter of Friday's 51-point win by the Western Bulldogs over the Lions was assessed by the panel, who deemed that Akermanis had possession of the ball when Adcock laid the tackle, and that Adcock's tackle was not unreasonable as he would not have seen the ball spill free.

Similarly, Doughty's tackle on Collingwood onballer Alan Didak in the first term of Saturday's five-point win by the Magpies over the Crows was not considered unreasonable as the ball spilled free as Doughty tackled Didak.

Good result. He didn't deserve to be suspended or fined.

Jed Adcock: Was sorely missed when he was injured in round 15 because he returned to his best form after a lean 2008. His leadership was also a factor. Rating: 6.5

Great year, disappointing finish. He was a big factor in getting us to play finals again, so well done to him. Hope he can back it up again in 2010 when we can push even further into premiership contention.

I am coming out now calling an AA backpocket spot for this champion of our great club for the upcoming season he should be over the knee injury well and truely now did anyone notice that he did not kick the ball at all in the second semi 10 handballs clearly underdone and could not kick without being in pain me thinks but deserved a finals appearance alot more than some of the Hacks that could have been called in...... 2010 year of the Jed
