Biography

Quiet but with a determined, steely resolve, Jed Adcock excelled at three different sports as a youngster; athletics, basketball and Aussie Rules.

The boy from Maryborough in Country Victoria has constantly been kicking a football around since starting Auskick as a seven year-old. However, football was not always his sole sporting focus.

As a 10-year-old he was the third fastest sprinter in Victoria over the 70m, 100m and 200m. By the time he reached 12, Adcock had swapped the sprinting spikes for the high-tops and made his way into the underage Victorian basketball team.

If it wasn't for footy, I'd go and pursue basketball,” Adcock said. “I started playing basketball when I was five and ended up playing for Ballarat, so we travelled there for five or six years.”

“I played until I was about 16 then found it was too hard playing both (basketball and AFL) and I started getting better at footy and obviously had to focus on that.”

“They've both been close together in terms of what I like most, but I just felt there was more opportunities with football.''

And that proved to be the case for Adcock, who soon found himself playing for the TAC Cup’s North Ballarat Rebels as a 15 year-old mixing it with players three years his senior.

While a daunting prospect at the time fronting up to more physically dominating opponents, Adcock agreed it was a necessary evil for his career.

“It was tough,” he said. “They were all wearing full beards and stuff. It was a bit of a wake-up call. But the next year when I played, I knew what to expect.”

Adcock added a leadership edge to his aggressive game by captaining the Rebels in his final year before he was ultimately taken by the Lions in the 2003 National Draft.

As an 18 year-old, Adcock served his apprenticeship with the Suncoast Lions where he regularly stood out in the early stages of the season. His impressive form earned him a senior berth by Round 7 against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome.

He gathered nine possessions and kicked a goal on debut but was squeezed out of the team the following week. He played a second senior match against Fremantle in Perth in Round 9 before spending the remainder of the season in the Lions reserves.

When it comes to assessing Jed Adcock's second year as a Brisbane Lion, raw statistics can do a lot of the talking. He was one of only three Lions to play all 22 games, had the eighth most disposals at the club and finished fifth in the AFL's 2005 Rising Star award after he was nominated for a 22 possession effort against Carlton in Round 12.

Respected commentator and Rising Star judge Kevin Bartlett rated him the competition's second-best emerging player, behind only Richmond's Brett Deledio, while Rod Austin and Kevin Sheehan had Adcock ranked third.

Playing predominantly as a small defender, he provided plenty of dash and limpet-style tackling on opposition forwards. Along the way he earned the impressive scalps of Phil Matera (twice), Adem Yze and Gary Ablett.

By season's end, Adcock was considered an integral component of the Lions' defensive unit and was rewarded with third position in the club’s 2005 best and fairest award. He also fittingly received the 2005 Best Rookie and Most Improved Player awards.

A quad strain kept Adcock sidelined for the opening two months of the 2006 AFL season before he returned for the Round 8 clash with Port Adelaide. Unfortunately he re-injured his quad the following week against Fremantle and missed a further seven matches.

His body held up for the final six matches of the season and he picked up from where he left off. Despite returning to a team that had little to play for, Adcock was a shining light averaging over 20 disposals from defence.

With a frustrating 2006 season behind him, Adcock played all 22 matches in 2007, reaching new levels of fitness and performance.

“I learnt a lot about my body,” Adcock said in reflection of his 2007 training. “Every pre-season makes a huge amount of difference and you can certainly see the results when you get there.”

His increased fitness coupled with greater responsibility and a string of dashing performances down back earned him a role in the star-studded Lions midfield for the second half of the season. Adcock was also co-opted together with ruckmen Jamie Charman into the Lions’ leadership group for the second half of the season.

His efforts certainly didn’t go unnoticed by the Lions match committee who voted him as the club’s Runner-up behind Jonathan Brown at the 2007 Club Champion dinner, bettering his third placing from 2005.

It was not only his ball winning ability which caught the eye, but also his tackling pressure which earned him the additional club honour as the 2007 Most Effective Tackler.

I see a new style of play this year.He also had some interesting things to say about Stumps and The Menu that I will post in there player profiles

Thumbs up Lions leader backs Voss on overhaul

BRISBANE Lions vice-captain Jed Adcock says new coach Michael Voss has brought a "fresh" approach to coaching after Leigh Matthews' 10 years in charge.
Voss was appointed after Matthews stepped down last year and Adcock said the "structures and systems in place" under the former Brownlow medallist were "a fair bit different" to last season.
"With Vossy as new coach — fresh out of the game and working with the AIS — he's fresh with the style of play from other teams," Adcock told radio station SEN yesterday.
"He's also brought a lot from what he learnt from Leigh, so probably a bit of a mixture."
Voss captained the Lions to three flags under Matthews. After Voss retired, Matthews favoured a system of co-captains.
Adcock, who made his debut in 2004, has been named as the club's only vice-captain this year under sole captain Jonathan Brown.
"To be vice-captain is a huge surprise, but I guess it shows a little bit of hard work goes a long way," Adcock said.
"It's a huge honour (and) especially to be looked at that way when a new coach comes in."
The 23-year-old, from Maryborough in central Victoria, switched between the midfield and defence under Matthews. Under Voss he expects to spend more time in the midfield.
"I'm training as a midfielder, but as long as you've got a midfield background you can always go back — the running is not as hard playing defence as the midfield," he said.
"The indication (from Voss) is maybe start midfield, but there's a huge possibility I'll play defence at some time during the year."
Taken with pick 33 in the 2003 national draft, Adcock had a horror run with injury in 2006 before finishing runner-up in the club's best and fairest in 2007.
The former Rising Star nominee said recruit Daniel Rich, pick seven in last year's national draft, had settled in well at Brisbane.
"Daniel Rich looks like he'll be playing a few games this year.
"He's got a fantastic left foot coming out of the midfield, he can play in and under, but break away from the contest and deliver, which is good."
Ruckman Matthew Leuenburger was struck down with injuries last season. This summer he's bulked up and increased his training.
"You'll notice he's put on a fair bit of weight," Adcock said. "That's the main goal for ruckmen when they come into the system and he's looking good."

I believe we'll see this man fit and firing again.

With a new coach and new tactics, we'll see fresh enthusiasm from all.
