Height: 183cm

DOB: 08-03-1989
A midfielder who reads the play well, is good around stoppages and is an excellent user of the ball by hand or foot. Son of triple Carlton premiership player and former St Kilda coach Ken Sheldon, he looked set to join Carlton via the father-son rule but opted for the draft instead. Kicked two third-term goals to help the Oakleigh Chargers win their first premiership in the TAC Cup last year.

Don't have much info on Sam, but he played 9 games last year for Suncoast before he fractured his leg. In those games, he averaged 18 disposals and averaged 6 tackles, so he's a hard worker when not in possession.

Ziebell is my hope, and I reckon it will be him or Hartlett. maybe Hill.
Dayne Beams is a big chance to come to the club with our 2nd pick given he's a QLD'er, but there are plenty of guns that could slip through to that pick 25. Collier did last year.
We'll take a ruckman at some point, no idea who though, and I expect a crumber too, possibly Jetta.

Was revealed by Voss at the AGM that Sammy has suffered a pretty major setback.
Is currently back home in Melbourne recovering from a pretty bad case of glandular fever and has lost a considerable amount of weight. He is being managed very cautiously(I imagine to avoid possible relapses or even worse, developing into chronic fatigue syndrome).
Best case scenario is a mid 2009 return to playing action. Feel bad for the kid, he showed a lot of commitment and self-belief by nominating a year before Carlton were willing to draft him, he deserves some good luck.It is very sad for my good mate i am devistated and sometimes this takes 2 years 2 get ova hopefully he will be bak at sunny coast in mid year next year at the earliest!!!!!!!

Well it looks like the young fellow will get a game this week after Dalziel got injured and the likely dropping of many players from the seniors. The kid dominated in the reserves, and just may be what the lions are looking for with extra quality in the middle.
I can't wait to see why he got the #3 guernsey and if he deserves it.
b_lions16
27-04-2009, 04:17 PM
He's got the Glandular Fever and I think he has recovered (?). He got Vossy's #3 simply cuz he asked for it but his Dad was a champ for Carlton and cannot wait how this bloke goes as he's been on our list for 2 years and hasn't got a Senior Game yet and he hasn't got the chop, then Vossy obviously is keen to give this guy a run. :D

80kgs...and he's not the in-and-under type...more of an accumulator that can run and carry...keep in mind, Kade Simpson is only 77kgs!...lol. :D

ok, he's obviously put on a bit - he's heavier than Hooper& he's a great tackler. Could see Hooper, Proud, Austin & Sheldon all in this week. Doesnt solve the ruck issue though.

Sounds like a good replacement for Dalziell...He has to play now he is in his 3rd season...if he doesn't play now how will he ever get in the team? Considering he gets BOG in the reserves, and the seniors are full of hacks!

I would like to see harding & pround get a good month in the seniors without risk of being dropped...They need a good stint with some pressure taken off to see what they can do. Sherman & McGrath got their extended chance and have failed big time, so lets give these boys ago.

He needs to work his butt off if given the opportunty and give us some more talent in the middle

Considering we have key players struggling to get past 10 disposals, I don't see why debuting 2 players would be a major problem. I say we roll the dice and get some fresh talent in.

I think you will be very happy with redden in a few seasons. I know alot of teams where very disappointed when he was drafted. The situation reminds me of the crows pick of Dangerfield over Ebert, and how Ebert looked like a loss change for the crows, but after the start of this season Dangerfield looks damm good and will play over 200 games

Don't get me wrong Balone...I reckon he's gunna be a surprise packet in a few years, and remember Simon Black was taken Pick 30 in the '99 Draft! Just think that Dayne Beams was the better option for the present years, but I'm happy to see how he goes. ;)

LION cub Sam Sheldon will make his AFL debut on Saturday night after being called up for Brisbane's clash with Essendon at the Gabba. Sheldon has been named on the interchange bench and is one of four changes to the Lions (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/club/0,27044,5016181,00.html) side that was thrashed by 93 points at Geelong (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,25389099-5016169,00.html) on Sunday.
Scott Harding, Albert Proud and Cheynee Stiller have also been called up in place of injured pair Bradd Dalziell, who'll miss up to six weeks with a knee injury (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,25404072-5016181,00.html), and Tom Collier (AC joint), while Lachlan Henderson and Jason Roe have been omitted.
Sheldon, a midfielder/small forward, came to Brisbane in 2007, courtesy of the Lions' decision to take him as a 17-year-old with pick No. 70 at the national draft.
He has endured two injury-plagued seasons, breaking his leg in his first campaign before being struck down with osteitis pubis in early 2008.
In October last year he was diagnosed with a severe dose of glandular fever.
Sheldon's father Ken enjoyed a stellar career at Carlton, where he won three premierships, and St Kilda. http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,25408993-5016169,00.html

THE "fun" is over for Sam Sheldon.
The Brisbane Lions (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/club/0,27044,5016181,00.html) young gun wants to be treated like any other player now he has had his belated taste of AFL football.
Earning his debut after Brisbane's embarrassing 93-point loss to Geelong (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,25389099-5016169,00.html) last month, Sheldon is two-for-two going into the Lions' Gabba clash with Adelaide tomorrow night.
But rather than resting on his laurels and seeing himself as the club's "lucky charm", the son of Carlton and St Kilda great Ken Sheldon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Sheldon) knows reserves football could be just around the corner if coach Michael Voss believes his form isn't up to scratch.
"In my first game Vossy just said 'go out there and have fun, and to remember why you play footy - because you love it'.
"Then is the second game he said 'you're in the team now, so you've got to do you're job, know your role and perform it'."
Sheldon, 20, said he was relishing the pressure and believed playing in defence was the best place to launch his top-flight career.
"You've got to keep putting your best foot forward and have a crack.
"You can't worry too much about getting dropped," said Sheldon, who would have made his AFL debut a lot earlier if not for lengthy battles with a broken leg and osteitis pubis.
"The backline's a great spot to start your AFL career because you can shut down a bloke and then build from there.
"But hopefully one day I'll be in the midfield and have a run up forward every now and then."
In Sheldon's corner is one of the Lions' most influential figures, inspirational club captain Jonathan Brown.
"He's got so much enthusiasm and it's great to see," Brown said.
"I've got a soft spot for Sammy and it's been exciting to see him go so well."
Sheldon has no regrets about moving to Brisbane from Victoria in 2007, saying footy-mad Melbourne had its drawbacks particularly when your father is a part of the sport's landscape.
"I didn't like it that much as a kid, with my old man getting hassled when he walked down the street," he said.
"I love it up here and the fact that you can be just a normal person without all the attention.
"This is home now."
But despite his preference for Brisbane, Sheldon admitted he was in seventh heaven last weekend when he played at the MCG in the Lions' win over Richmond (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,25454061-5016169,00.html).
"I loved it," he said.
"I used to go to the 'G' all the time as a kid. Every time I went there I used to think 'I'd love to play on this ground one day'.
"To run out there early in the game was just a feeling you can't explain.
"It's obviously the home of football."

The thing sheldon brings to the team is skills, which if you remeber last season and early this season we couldn't kick the side of a barn door as Vossy quoted so nicely...But having a youngster come in and hit targets all game it really does put pressure on the more senior players to get their shit together. Sheldon is just so reliable with the ball in his hands

02-07-2009, 03:52 PM
Strength through the hips and core is more important than strong arms and shoulders coz it means you can break tackles easily. I guess as a defender he needs to get some more upper body strength, but the type of player he is right now (running through the lines) is perfect for his body. He has a smart head on those shoulders.

His first game was in Round 6 against the Bombers. ..so 7 now.
Looks lanky...and as Worbs said, as a defender, yo u need to get buff in the upper part of your body. ..that's more for stoppers I reckon, and since She ldon is more of a rebounder, I reckon he needs the leg muscles to work as well...lol.

GETTING a regular spot in a winning Brisbane Lions outfit has been anything but a smooth ride for small forward Sam Sheldon.
The 20-year-old admitted he suffered a serious dose of home sickness after a nightmare run of injuries cruelled not only most of his first two seasons, but his enthusiasm as well.
Sheldon suffered a broken leg early in his first season, then osteitis pubis destroyed most of his second, but he battled through and has now played the last 13 games for the club and proved a valuable contributor whether playing back or forward.
Sheldon comes from great footballing stock, being the son of three-time Carlton premiership player and former St Kilda coach Ken.
He was drafted by the Lions in 2006 and said moving to Brisbane as a 17-year-old and breaking his leg in just his fifth game in reserves was difficult to overcome.
"It took the sting out of me and I questioned what I was doing a bit," he said.
"I was tight with my family and friends back home and you're sitting around thinking about it and not being able to do anything, and I wanted to go home.
"Leigh Matthews was great and told me to go home for a few weeks to sort myself out and come back ready to go.
"Then I got the osteitis pubis and it took me a while to get over it.
"Now I'm back to where I want to be. I had to change my walking style and do a lot of core strength, but everything's going better than ever."
Sheldon said playing his first game for the Lions was as much for his family and friends after their support over the years.
One of his biggest supporters is his father Ken, who the former Oakleigh Charger said had been "a massive influence" on his career.
"I speak to dad all the time but he makes a big effort to not interfere and he likes to look on from the outside and let me go about it my own way,'' Sheldon said.
"I'm best mates with my old man and he's the first bloke I turn to when I have a question.
"He goes to all the games, even if I don't see him beforehand, he's there. I didn't think he was at Subiaco (when the Lions played Fremantle) but he was there. He gave me a call afterwards."
Sheldon could have been snapped up by Carlton under the father-son rule, but the Blues overlooked him.
The 183cm utility said he had no hard feelings towards the team he grew up supporting and said he was thankful just to get an opportunity in the league.
And it's working out just fine at the moment, with one of his boyhood heroes Michael Voss coaching in his first season in the senior team.
Sheldon has even taken over Voss's iconic No.3 Lions guernsey.
"I loved watching Vossy. Every person that loves sport would love watching Vossy though because he was so good, one of the best.
"He's a very good coach. To step in straight away and do what he's done is a very hard thing to do.
"Players like Jonathan Brown and Simon Black look up to him. I look at him with an aura and so do they. Just his feel of the group is very very good and I think that's why he's been successful so far."
Sheldon has slowly found his feet in the top flight, with his courage and hard-nut attitude exactly what the coach looks for.
He said moving between back and forward was not a problem.
"I'm working hard to get my handball and kicking to that next level," he said.
"The hardest thing I've found is having to rock up every week and be at your best and I think I have to go up another level. I have to keep building that work rate and doing the one-percenters and staying involved."

OMFG...GET BACK TO THE TWOS!...lol. :D
He's a kid...and he's starting to slump major balls because he's getting more fatigued every game. Bring in TeeJay...he's working his arse off in the Reserves, and he has experience. ;)

I have been caling for this for weeks I like Sheldon but beleive Vossy should take the Malthouse stance and rotate the First year players bring them in for 3 to 4 games then give them a rest it has worked wonders for Beams and Bahram for the pies give him a week or two in the2's

he can hit a target well and was doing fine in defence when he first came in playing in the back pocket I still don't no why Vossy plays up forward.

I don't know what Vossy is doing with the fucking team...he's messing it up.
GET SHELDON OUT! 6 touches is bloody not enough...he's getting tired...go to SunnyCoast lad. :D
Doubt Vossy will tho...he's shitted in the thinking department.

because no one else can...it is our achilles heel. We must trade for a forward line player in the off season

But I agree with the whole passenger thing...we won't go far in the finals, but at least we get a finals game into our players. Hopefully we can play a finals at the MCG

Hopefully the Dogs loose the next 2 and Adelaide loose at least 1 so we can grab 5th spot and book ourselves into a Home Final...make it to the next round at least and play @ the MCG. It'll be a great experience for the younger blokes and we can then gear up for next year, IMO. ;)

the last month has been pretty ordinary,
The swans match in sydney is a real danger game, the only lost to the siants by a point and nearly beat the cats.
We SHOULD beat the power just like we SHOULD of beat them last time. Lets hope the niggling, in your face tatics of the power dont unsettle the boys like last time.
Be good to see josh carr going back to adelaide with out a win.

totally agree, he is not a goalscorer, I dont know why vossy continues with him in the foward line.
From all accounts Rhan hooper went well in resreves kicked a couple of goals, we need him in the team, he may have his flaws but he can find the goals, which is what we need at the moment arrrgghhh
hopefully he will be back for the finals, Dont know why he isnt playing v the swans,

How was that miss on goal...just aweful!!! What are peoples thoughts on his position in the team. I rate him pretty highly on potential, but I can't see him making a great backliner or forward player...so I guess we need to make him a midfielder...What do people think of this

Speed could be an issue with the tagging job and if he is put on an opponent that is a little taller than him he will dragged forward and out marked his strengths are his short game and he is pretty tough looks like a future mid.........maybe:D

His old man Ken played as a champ for Carlton. The lead up to the goal was just fantastic, bulked several defenders but just sprayed the kick. He's got potential, I say play him HF/Midfield just to see how he goes. He's been stuck playing forward pocket and that has stunted his development, IMO. ;)

well the lions don't play the true forward pockets... our forward line is usually just B&B alone, so Sheldon should be able to fine heaps of ball if he trys. And also, look at leCras at the eagles, I don't think his development has wavier this season playing forward pocket, with him now ready to step up in the midfield next season
b_lions16
12-09-2009, 07:48 PM
I reckon we SHOULD play true forward pockets as our attacking unit is just disastrous bar B+B. So I say we should move Polkinghorne into the pocket. LeCras has moved forward a bit into the midfield but still plays the majority of his footy in the attacking 50.

i totally agree, and have been screaming all season for Vossy to get a better forward line setup...We need a better small foward though, unless Hooper gets going in 2010. I also like the idea of pok-a-dot as a crumber as I see alot of Chris knights in him

Sam Sheldon: Probably the one who finished the strongest of all the kids. Was an example of how hard you have to work as a half-forward. Needs to become stronger but is a skilful player who could see more time in the midfield in coming years. Rating: 6.5

He got tired with the more games he played and he was a passenger in our side for the last 5 or 6 weeks, IMO. Had next to no impact or influence and was just too inexperienced. Don't want him in the side unless he proves himself in the Twos.

My throughts aswell 16 I made it known that I was not his number 1 fan for most of the last 3rd of the year and do not see him in the seniors for many if any games next year and the fact that his name was floated after the Braddy/Risky deal feel threw makes me think with the additions and a fit squad Sammy will be a star at state level next year:rolleyes:

doesnt he live with browny (well he use to before they had there baby) and he also wears vossys number, so there is a bit of love there for him, he also had his first season without injury or illness.
In saying all that I think he will be lucky to play 5 games, he will spend alot of time in reserves. with 5 new players and a stack of very good players playing across HB pushing up into the mids he will stuggle to cement a place.
