Recruited from: Mt Gravatt (QLD)

Introduction
Albert Proud’s fierce attack on the ball and goal sense makes him a useful option both up forward and in the centre. The courageous and aggressive Queenslander is recognised as a natural ball-winner whose trademark ‘grunt’ adds another dimension to the Lions midfield.

Background
• Originally from Melbourne, Proud moved away from his parents to live with his sister in Brisbane as a 15 year-old and he later lobbed with a schoolmate’s family.

• He joined the local Mt Gravatt Football Club and before long was selected to represent his State for the first time as an underage player in the 2005 U18 national championships.

• His junior performances were so impressive that he became highly touted as a potential top-five pick at the beginning of 2006 before a stress fracture forced him to keep him foot in plaster for the opening months of the season.

• He returned in time for the national U18 championships where he was selected as Queensland’s Captain. A natural leader, he helped guide Queensland to its first Division Two title since 1999.

• Upon his return for local AFLQ club Mt Gravatt, Proud tore ligaments which sidelined him further.

• He still managed to represent Australia in the U18 International Series against Ireland in the third and deciding match after being sidelined for the first two games.

• He had been compared to Norm Smith Medallist Byron Pickett for his zeal and aggression with which he hunts man and ball alike.

• The Lions had no hesitation in selecting the local talent when he was still available with their second pick (No.22 overall) in the 2006 National Draft.

2007
• During his first pre-season with the Lions, Proud further established a reputation as a hard-nut. In a simple training drill, the young Queenslander sandwiched himself between two of the Lions’ bigger players – Jonathan Brown and Daniel Merrett – and ended up with a busted shoulder.

• While the injury was only minor, it kept him sidelined until Round 2 of the 2007 season when he appeared for the Lions Reserves side in the AFLQ.

• Proud made an immediate impact in the AFLQ both in the centre and up forward and did no harm to his chances of a possible senior debut.

• He eventually got his opportunity in Round 12 against Geelong at Skilled Stadium when he was called-up for his senior debut. He collected eight disposals against the eventual premiers in tough conditions at Kardinia Park, but showed plenty of hardness against his more experienced opposition.

• He spent limited match-time on the field the following week against Port Adelaide before spending the remainder of the season in the Reserves side.

• He played all but one matches for the year (including two senior games) to prove that he had overcome any injuries that he had experienced in his final year as a junior.

2008
• Despite completing an impressive pre-season training campaign where he was regularly named among the Lions’ best players in their pre-season practice matches, Proud failed to make the senior team for the season opener against West Coast at Subiaco.

• A dominant performance with the Lions Reserves resulted in his immediate recall for the team’s Round 2 clash against Collingwood.

• Used primarily as an impact player, Proud featured in two consecutive matches before being sent back to the Reserves to work on his endurance.

• He continued to star for the Lions Reserves but managed only one more senior match until Round 17 when the team felt need to bring in a hard-nosed midfielder to help the likes of Simon Black and Luke Power.

• Proud responded immediately with a career-high 21 disposals against North Melbourne at Gold Coast Stadium. He remained in the seniors for four of the last five matches – taking his career total to nine.

• His efforts for the Lions Reserves were rewarded when he finished sixth in the AFLQ’s Grogan Medal and earned selection in the AFLQ Velocity Sports Cup Team of the Year.

2009
• Proud put in one of his hardest pre-seasons in 2009 and reached personal best times on the training track. However, an off-field indiscretion saw him suspended by the Club during the pre-season which interrupted his progress.

• He missed the Club's season-opener against the Eagles at the Gabba but returned the following week and went on to play 13 of the next 16 senior matches.

• He became a regular feature of the side predominantly as a hard-tackling small forward and occasional midfielder. He kicked the first goal of his AFL career against Adelaide in Round 8 and finished with a season tally of four.

• After playing in the team's Round 17 win over North Melbourne, Proud was forced to sit out the rest of the season with a serious foot injury.

I read a lot of good things about this bloke and he made a good impression on me during the pre-season match Vs Essendon.

I hope he'll earn a senior spot soon and keep it. Really looking forward to watching his pace. Judging by looks has quite a strong looking upper body so I'm hoping he'll throw his weight around and hurt some opponents with it.

He does look solid for a young player. I'm looking forward to seeing him play.

If Adcock needs time off for that leg injury, he should be the natural replacement.

Didn't do so well this week. Hope we have drier conditions next weekend that better suit him.

Playing well down in the reserves.
He'll be pushing for a call-up very soon including this week's game Vs the Dees.

That would be great if he played. He needs game time to establish himself.

He gets named in the best EVERY week for Suncoast, but hard to get a game when our best 22 is almost available.

Born the same day as me, so thats a plus ;)

the_champ33
27-06-2008, 03:18 PM
Plenty of blokes over the years have done well in the reserves, but can't break into the seniors. Happened during the Premiership years and happening again now.

Proud must keep it up and eventually he'll have to be considered.

However with the 2nd half of the year almost upon us, I think we'll be looking for a settled side with limited changes and no injuries.

worbsy
27-06-2008, 03:31 PM
His aggression at the ball and his physicality is something the lions have always had, so I reckon he fits in there really well. We don't have many players like that right now though, except probably Charman. Browny has settled down since that big suspension in 2004

the_champ33
27-06-2008, 03:32 PM
I always knew he had that since the pre season.

He could do with the AFL experience. He needs to learn and adjust to AFL level. I don't think he quiet knows what he's up for yet.

True Brown has toned down, I agree.

the_champ33
13-07-2008, 09:18 PM
Latest was Albert had a chest problem of some sort and up for a test. He deserves a call-up into the seniors with consistent form in the reserves. He should come in for Copeland or Selwood.

worbsy
13-07-2008, 09:37 PM
He'll be in next week, and hopefully he can stay there.

the_champ33
14-07-2008, 11:00 AM
Returned to the reserves on the weekend after the chest complaint. Played brilliantly once again, won plenty of hard ball and kicked 5 goals as well.

We must give him a seniors berth this week.

Proud should be closest to winning the reserves league B&F medal.

worbsy
14-07-2008, 03:54 PM
Give him a spot in the seniors for more than just one week, that's what I want to see. He's ready.

worbsy
14-07-2008, 05:44 PM
We all know a bit about Proud. He looks a gun.

Don't have much stat info on him, but last year for Suncoast he played 18 games and averaged 22 disposals. He had 39 in one of those games, and kicked 6 goals in another.

Obviously his 2008 numbers would be well up on this, and i reckon he'll play next week against the eagles.

the_champ33
14-07-2008, 09:22 PM
I expect him to be playing against the Eagles.

Bring on the Proud.

We should email the club and make sure of it

Still not in the starting side this week... so disappointing

the_champ33
17-07-2008, 09:27 PM
Disappointed he's not in the 22, but I still expect him to come in for Simon Black.

He'll need to be given a reward in the seniors before he considers seeking opportunity elsewhere and rubbing it in.

Craig Bolton @ the Swans has definitely shown it.

worbsy
21-07-2008, 05:44 PM
Had a smaller impact for Suncoast this week apparently. Don't like his chances of a senior game this week then.

the_champ33
21-07-2008, 08:28 PM
that was due to a tag and one of the better taggers in the reserves. Still deserves a spot in the seniors. Give it to him.

wildlime
21-07-2008, 09:01 PM
Poor bugger. makes you wonder who he has offside. He is BOG most weeks in the reserves, and can't get a gig in the main team. I thought he was stiff to get dropped when he did. Hard to shine when you are sitting on the pine.

worbsy
21-07-2008, 09:11 PM
Very true Gayle. If Copeland can get a game, Proud should be a certain starter every week!

Even Selwood has played more games than him this year, and we all know how good he's been...

sammij33
22-07-2008, 08:44 PM
albie hasn't lived up to leigh's expectations when he has had games i would like to see him play but

sammij33
22-07-2008, 08:52 PM
i think leigh expects more out of him and he just hasnt given it when he has had the chance he is awesome in ressies but i he still make silly mistakes when playing seniors

the_champ33
22-07-2008, 08:54 PM
Well it takes a rookie time to learn AFL level, it's nothing like the reserves or other leagues they have come from. Proud will get better with experience and training

worbsy
22-07-2008, 09:04 PM
He needs to get some senior games to get that experience though. Lethal needs to give him more chances.

24-07-2008, 09:33 PM

Hopefully he can fire up this weekend and have a big one after a poor one last week due to a tag.

What a great quote, given the games from Collier, Copeland and Stiller (after the 1st qtr or so)

Hope Proud gets a game this week, fight fire with fire against the roos with his toughness at the ball.

30-07-2008, 09:56 AM
its difficult to live up to expectations when you are only given 1 game at a time. Collier has been handled well, why not do the same with Proud? Give him 4-6 games to prove himself.

worbsy
30-07-2008, 04:15 PM
Yep, he needs to string together a few senior games in a row to show what he can do. Hopefully that string can start this week.

We've found some promising young talent over the last couple of years with Berger, Proud, Magnet, Collier, Clark, Hendo etc.

We have something to build from. Hendo/Clark up fwd, Berger in ruck, Collier down back and Magnet/Proud in the middle.

Just need Michael Hurley as full back now!

b_lions16
16-08-2008, 03:40 PM
The young boy used the ball well. looks like a quality forward that's gonna be a future top-scorer for the club. Should be a dangerous pair with Proud and Brazell.

worbsy
16-08-2008, 04:36 PM
We need Proud to win a heap of contested ball this week. Doggies are one of the best sides at winning the 50/50's, and we'll need to compete in that area to be a chance this week.

worbsy
18-08-2008, 11:08 PM
45% game time isn't much of an opportunity, I can see that, but when he was on, he gave away 3 free kicks. He had 5 touches in the first half at 40% effectiveness and none in the last half, which I don't think he played much AT ALL though.

Next year maybe...

worbsy
19-08-2008, 12:21 PM
He's out of contract which sucks... hopefully he signs on for a while yet.

the_champ33
19-08-2008, 03:11 PM
I want Proud to stay, but I'm worried he'll seek opportunity elsewhere given he struggled to break into the side a lot this year.

Shaun Hart said on radio Vs the Kangaroos that he goes through the motions and half-hearted in warm-up's etc, says the man and other needs to show more grunt and intensity.

worbsy
19-08-2008, 03:24 PM
That's disappointing if it's true about the efforts in warm-ups, etc. Hints that he doesn't want to be there as much as he should...

the_champ33
19-08-2008, 03:25 PM
I found that disappointing too and I'm not going to dispute that from Shaun Hart. He knows as he was the Runner last year.

Jedstheman
28-08-2008, 10:09 PM
Picked for the last game of the year needs to have a big game so we resign him and if not maybe increase his trade value.

worbsy
29-08-2008, 11:26 AM
The only reason he would leave is by his own choosing. No chance the club would want to see him go. He matches up well against Sydney, because he has that hardness at stoppages.

the_champ33
29-08-2008, 08:39 PM
Good to see him back in the seniors. I look forward to his impact.

worbsy
29-08-2008, 11:18 PM

I hate seeing players leaving to go back 'home' to Melbourne. More QLD players we have the better, absolutely. And Risky had better stay, there is talk around that with Bombers wanting to trade away Andrew Lovett that they'll use the spot to really have a crack at securing Risky. Offering him up to 380k a year or something... Pretty bloody good offer for someone his age.

b_lions16

yep.......need more crumbers instead of marks inside fifties and free kicks. Just some of our forwards aren't versatile enough to kick goals on the run. Hoops and MacG should be moved forward.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Albie. From the 7 games, he's played for us, he hasn't shown anything but inaccurate disposal and shocking accuracy when going for goal. He's speed will definitely be a key for the Future Lion Cubs, but at the moment he's going to spend most of the season with Sunnycoast fine-tuning his skills.

Albert Proud has been training as an onballer all summer and is set to play that role in 09 as reported in the sunday Mail yesterday

Jedstheman
20-01-2009, 05:00 PM
I left out what some of what was said in the article.
"Proud has been shifted from the middle to half forward so far as a senior player but will be an onballer purely this year"
Makes me think Luke Power might be seeing some time up forward what do you think Worbs.

the_champ33
20-01-2009, 08:53 PM
I hope to see Albert Proud given a chance and also show his potential. Hopefully he works hard and the rewards show.

Shaun Hart said on ABC Radio commentary once last year that he needed to step up including in the warm ups. Looked like Proud was just going through the motions sometimes.

b_lions16
20-01-2009, 09:03 PM
I reckon Albie would do good as an onballer. He's got pace to win out in a loose ball contest, accurate kick, and makes the most of possession. He could get in front and kick goals as well.

With the position swapping by Vossy, we could see us adapt to the new gameplay well.

Jedstheman
26-01-2009, 10:35 PM
Proud has looked good in pre season training it is good........... as mentioned by The Champ his commitment to training has been questioned in the past but if the storys are rite and he is now "Training the house Down" the guy could be a bloody star we all know he can do it ........now Vossy has just got to give him the game time and trust him to prove it to us

The key to Proud having an impact at senior level is his endurance. If he's built that up, it will be a big year for him.

b_lions16

His endurance was always a problem for him....but he's built on that now..throw him his pace and skilled use of the ball....a dangerous onballer.

Read an article today that was in yesterdays paper that Proud endured a long summer of gut running and can now match it with Magnet no fabrication in that last comment these were the words Worbs Proud to on Fire next year may even be on the bench on D.T if he is named as a defender like he was last year......Go albie Go!!!!!!:D

This is a huge plus albie building his endurance up it is good we need him to play more than 40 minutes a game......... Lethal did not give him enough game time IMO hope Vossy lets off the leash in the Nab and we can see him for real.Come the home and away season another onballer will only help us rite?

Albie can rotate through the middle and up forward if needed...Black gets the number one tagger every week as he is our best mid...someone else might need to take that job now. Albie as an onballer is a great idea...pace and endurace. ;)

THE BRISBANE Lions AFC confirms that third-year player Albert Proud has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm over an alleged glass throwing incident that resulted in an injury to a female patron at a Gold Coast bar last Saturday night.
The Lions are investigating the matter and the Club has notified the AFL of the incident in accordance with AFL Rules, and are keeping the AFL fully informed of all information as it becomes available.
The Lions take this matter extremely seriously and Proud has been suspended from the Lions as well as omitted from the AFL Indigenous All-Star squad pending completion of the Club's investigation.
The player is providing full cooperation to the police and Club investigation and deeply regrets being involved in this incident.
It is inappropriate for the Club to make any further comment or take any further action until the matter has been fully investigated.

He came 6th in the Grogan Medal, which is awarded to a player in the best player in the AFLQ that year. Similar to the Brownlow. He's completed his best season with us like I've said and I hope that he'll get past that off-field incident, cement a spot in the Best 22 like Champ said, and be the link that we need. No update on Alberts Court date today which is a positive.......If he did get max punishment for his hissy fit Jail time beckoned and the press would of been all over it but as there are no stories in the print media or on T.V It makes me think the whole thing has been Quashed whitch is good......... Al can now put his focus 100% on football and paying back the club for standing by him in his darkest hour thus far.:D

Frankly, we don't need any more injuries or issues. It's just not our start to the year. It's been injury after injury.

Byron Pickett certainly just charged into the ball and killed everyone in the contest. ;)
He's not as big and angry as Charmo and Picka were, and he certainly has pace...just hope that whatever happened off-field won't turn into an on-field affair....

ALBERT Proud's lawyer has expressed his frustration after the Brisbane Lions midfielder's assault case was again adjourned. Proud (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Proud) was set to re-appear at Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday on a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,,25007732-10389,00.html), following several earlier adjournments.

However, the case was adjourned until May 12 after some of the facts of the case were again disputed.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years' jail.

Proud, 20, was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount by the Lions (http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,,25009575-5016169,00.html) following a January 31 incident at a Gold Coast bar.

Police allege Proud threw a glass at a 23-year-old woman who required stitches to a cut above her eye.

The Lions lifted their suspension in order for Proud to play the NAB Cup quarter-final against Essendon on February 27.

Proud has played the last two AFL games for the Lions, including last Saturday night's 33-point win over Sydney at the Gabba.

"We are trying to get some agreed facts between the prosecution and ourselves," Proud's lawyer Steve Miotti said.

"The prosecution requested an extension of time to get those facts prepared.

"It's been very frustrating to be honest. We were hoping to deal with this quite quickly.

"We've been adjourned a couple of times through no fault of our own - it's a bit disappointing."

Miotti said Proud was holding up well despite playing with an assault case hanging over his head.

"I spoke to him after the game on Saturday. He's a bit frustrated like we all are but we are trying to get it dealt with as quickly as we can," he said.http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,25337471-5016181,00.html

If it was serious the prosecution would have a case and nailed him the fact that they are still trying to build a case says that they are clutching at straws:D

POLICE are expected to lay another assault charge against Brisbane Lions midfielder Albert Proud, after a second woman came forward claiming she was hurt during an incident at a Gold Coast bar.
Proud is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to a single charge of assault occasioning bodily harm on January 31.

In that incident, police said the AFL player threw a glass at a 23-year-old NSW woman who needed stitches for a cut above her eye.

In Southport Magistrates Court today, Proud's lawyer Steve Miotti said police had indicated they would seek to lay a fresh charge this week.

"There will be another charge laid against my client, somewhat late I might add,'' he told the court.

"Through some discussion in an effort to agree on the facts of the case a third party seems to wish to complain about an element of conduct.''

Magistrate Brian Kilmartin adjourned the matter for mention on June 1, adding an application to vacate Proud's guilty plea would be heard then.

Outside the court, Mr Miotti said he feared the court case could now drag on for months.

The woman making the new assault claims was one of a group at whom the glass was thrown during the incident.

I know Albie did something wrong, VERY wrong.. But he is a great player and I would like him to play. But I also don't believe in double-standards so whatever punishment he gets, he will have deserved it.
