Possibly the big draft on what new players the Brisbane Lions will be getting. We will also be looking into the State League boards to see what talents we can get from that. I'm worried about what new talent that could excite Worbs because officially he's one new mancrush short of becoming a manwhore!

Scotty has been on about Tapescott or god knows the surname and I have no club what new talent there is because I run a active forum you may have heard of. So excite me and not so much Worbs :) and tell me what we might be getting and see if Voss can top the monster success of Daniel "How good is Rich?!" Rich

I'm sure Scotty will inform you it is Tapscott (unless I'm mistaken as well)

I think we should rookie list Ezard from the SANFL...he was on Ports list but got delisted, and instead of returning home to VIC he stayed in the SANFL to show Port they made a mistake (his own words)...the result was a Magarey Medal in the midfield. We should draft him as a mature age recruit...I really think he can setup into the AFL

Can we please a player who knows where to be when the ball drops down next to Brown or Bradshaw? And I don't mean near the sideline thinking the big two will do the work

Lewis Jetta. Quick midfielder/small forward and is a mature age recruit, so he has a mature body and can jump straight in to AFL Footy and make a reasonable impact.
Tapscott is my number 1 priority tho, doubt he will slip down to us tho. He's tipped as going as high as number 5 to North!
And we could get Kane Lucas or even Benny Cunnington who will both become gun midfielders.

WEST Australian Lewis Jetta's prospects of being selected in the first round of next month's NAB AFL Draft remain wide open with the 20-year-old interviewed by at least 10 clubs at last week's draft camp.
Despite being the oldest player in attendance, it was a nervous week for Jetta, who said his discussion with Port Adelaide was the toughest though he was happy with how he handled it.
"Everything he (Power coach Mark Williams) said, I had an answer to it so I'm happy with that," Jetta said.
Jetta is the cousin of Essendon's Leroy and Melbourne's Neville and admits to taking advice from both of them, particularly Neville, who attended last year's draft camp and was eventually taken by the Demons with their fourth-round pick (No.51 overall).
"Just last week I rang him up five times for some tips," he said. "I'm pretty nervous about this. He told me to try to do everything.
"A lot of the big time draftees probably won't do much so I should try to do everything."
Neville wouldn't have been able to provide advice on the kicking test, which was designed by Nathan Buckley and made its first appearance at the camp.
"I was nervous and also stressed about it," he said. "I stress a lot about my left foot so I was happy to get through it. When it was my turn the wind started blowing a bit heavier."
This year, Jetta took the most significant step in his development, playing a full season of senior football with WAFL club Swan Districts.
Given the gap between the end of the Swans' season and the start of the camp, he admitted his skills were a bit rusty.
"I hadn't touched a footy for two weeks," he said. "I was just having a rest. This was the first time I've touched a footy since we finished."
Jetta's kicking isn't his strong suit, but he has plenty of other attributes that have recruiters taking notice.
His blistering pace and clean hands are behind the growing opinion that he could even break into the top 10 of this year's pool.
However, he is taking a wait-and-see approach.
And even though he has a slight frame – 178cm and 72kg – Jetta found a foolproof way of coming up against harder bodies at WAFL level.
"I adapted to the skill level and the speed pretty quickly," he said. "As soon as I grabbed the ball I would run for my life trying not to get killed out there."

These are our picks for the 2009 AFL National Draft:

27, 47, 76, 92, 108, 124 and 140

Overall, you can see they are pretty crap, so getting Tapscott or Jetta is out of the question. ;)

What kind of position player will we be after with that oh so awesome pick #27 you reckon? Jake Melksham is the ball-winning midfielder who won the TAC Cup Grand Final Medal. Gary Rohan topped the kicking accuracy test @ the Draft Camp with 77% and his bad form towards the end of the season will see him slip down. But not as far as Pick 27, IMO. Troy Taylor could slip down to us, tho, he's been touted the next Danny Motlop.

With the trade period over, next on the AFL agenda is the national draft. Emma Quayle looks at the key questions surrounding this year's talent pool.
So, is this year's draft really as bad as everyone has been saying?

''Yes'', was how one recruiting manager answered that question. ''It's mediocre,'' said another, and that seems a popular line of thinking. Each draft has ''layers'' of talent, and the very top layer this year is a small one. Where last year there were, say, 15 players any recruiter would have happily picked, this year some are nominating as few as four. Others say it's more like six, eight or 10. What happens? The consensus is, it evens out quickly, that you don't really want to be picking after 50 and that there are fewer certain prospects. ''It flatlines after 10,'' said a recruiter. ''That doesn't mean there aren't any reasonable players there, but there aren't any absolute guarantees, and everyone's list will be different. Someone's No. 11 will be someone else's 30.'' Said another: ''After 10, you could throw a blanket over 30 of them.'' Because the group is considered so even, this may be a draft where ''needs'' come into play with picks as early as the teens. Adding to that is that Melbourne and the Power will share so many early picks [they share seven of the first 18]. They might pick someone ahead of time with the last of their picks. It's a weird situation: the Port team's day will be done before Geelong starts at pick 17.

Why is there no depth?
The 17-year-olds have been removed - and they generally comprise about a third of any draft. One recruiter suspects 20 would have been drafted this year. Plus, many of those 17-year-olds - the best of whom have been signed by the Gold Coast - are very, very good players. At least three - Josh Toy, Maverick Weller and Luke Russell, plus possibly Trent McKenzie and one or two more - would have been first-round picks if they were in this year's draft. Toy would have pushed for top three. ''We'd be talking about what an amazingly good first round we had if those players were in it,'' said one recruiter. This draft could see a really low number of players chosen, and it's hard to see anyone taking more than their mandatory three picks [aside from perhaps Melbourne, Essendon, Fremantle and Richmond, the first two having loaded up with top 30 picks] and possibly Geelong, which needs to bring in kids. For the first time this season, clubs can use one of those three picks to upgrade a rookie, and I suspect quite a few will take this option. We could only have 50-something fresh players drafted.

Who are the really good players?
Tom Scully and Jack Trengove seem, at this point, likely to be wearing Melbourne jumpers next year. All going well, they will play round one. Midfielders Dustin Martin and Ben Cunnington are in the top group, as is Anthony Morabito, a 190-centimetre wingman from Western Australia. They seem the distinct top five at this early stage. That Sydney offered Richmond draft picks six and 14 for No. 3, but didn't make Fremantle the same offer, tells us something.

Who are the best onballers?
The run-all-day Scully and the equally complete Trengove, but unless you're a Demon fan don't get too excited. People in Adelaide have been comparing Trengove's SANFL season - he had 30 possessions and took a match-saving mark in the preliminary final, then had 20 touches in Sturt's losing grand final team - with those of Bryce Gibbs and Nathan Buckley. I'm not sure everyone would agree, but there are little bits of his game - his floating marks - that remind me of James Hird, although Trengove is probably a more traditional midfielder. Martin has explosive speed [confirmed at the recent draft camp] and beautiful foot skills. Cunnington would almost kill someone to get to the ball, and can go forward; he and Trengove are probably the best marks in the midfield group. The top 10 picks will be dominated by midfielders, with Gary Rohan [maybe a mid, maybe a half-forward or half-back], Jake Melksham, Kane Lucas, Jordan Gysberts and Luke Tapscott names you will hear more of.

How about the talls?
There aren't very many of them. There aren't many really tall players, for a start; in fact, you might see a few ruckmen drafted out of state leagues or kept on lists when they might otherwise have been delisted. John Butcher seems clearly the best key-position prospect, but the thinking with the rest seems to be that while many have exciting qualities or attributes, none look like complete packages. They will need development, wherever they go. Jake Carlisle and Daniel Talia look like first-rounders - both can play forward or back, although some recruiters will tell you they only like Carlisle as a forward and others will tell you he's better down back. Gippsland ruckman Nathan Vardy might be in there somewhere, but again, he has shown mostly glimpses. ''He can jump, he can mark, he's got good technique,'' said one recruiter. ''But has hasn't shown it consistently. It's the same story with all of them. Norwood forward Matthew Panos may come into the mix in the 20s [earlier, should the Demons or Port pick him] and he's not a flashy or an aggressive player, but he takes marks, kicks goals and from all reports will lap up an AFL environment. David Astbury [North Ballarat] will fit in there somewhere, too. Aaron Black has burst onto the West Australian scene late but seems more of a tall utility than a true key-position player. James Craig shapes as the best ruck prospect, but he's only 195 centimetres. He's got a good leap, which helps, and the way Mitch Clark and Paddy Ryder played this year suggest his height won't matter so much. There is so much for recruiters to consider this year, the talls look like a lottery more than ever before. ''People are going to have completely different ideas about all of them,'' said one recruiter.

What's the deal with John Butcher?
Touted as a top two or three pick at the start of this year, Butcher hasn't had a fantastic year and his stocks seem to have fallen. He is this year's mystery man and no one seems sure where he will fit in at this stage. The critics will say he has a bad kicking action and that his work ethic can vary from game to game. But he is 197 centimetres and is the best contested mark in the draft, surely. He kicks points, but he also kicks goals. His endurance needs work, but he notched a 2.99-second sprint time for 20 metres. Having starred as a 17-year-old, he has been under the microscope for a long time. Butcher impressed in many of his interviews at draft camp and when the dust settles, it's hard to see him reaching the Demons at No. 11. ''He presented really well,'' said one recruiter. ''I watched him really closely in the time trial, I thought he busted a gut and I watched him really closely. I reckon he's right back in the mix.''

North Melbourne have been upset by injury-riddled defender Jesse Smith's decision to walk out on the club, claiming their facilities are not good enough.
Smith will nominate for the draft in a move that will deliver nothing to the Kangaroos, who say they have supported him throughout five troubled seasons.
In an explosive and bitter end to trade week, Smith's manager, Liam Pickering, said yesterday the Kangaroos did not have the right "tools" for his client's rehabilitation.
North Melbourne's chief of football, Donald McDonald, said the club was gutted by Smith's decision and criticism less than a month out from the opening of its new $15 million elite training facility.
"This is a very delicate situation because we could not have possibly worked any harder to get Jesse right," McDonald said.
"Every staff member to a man has bent over backwards to give Jesse every opportunity to get himself right. I challenge any club in the country to have worked harder to get him playing, but the responsibility also has to fall on the player.
"We are extremely disappointed by his decision to walk out, and then to be criticised, well, we are not going to cop it."
The midfielder has played only two games in the past two years and 27 amid a horror run of hamstring and ankle injuries.
In a further blow, talent identification expert Neville Stibbard said Smith, 23, had the talent to become an AFL star.
"Jesse is a genuine A-grade player," Stibbard said. "He is as good as Brendon Goddard . . . he is an elite talent."
North offered Smith an incentive-based two-year deal but was knocked back and opted not to trade him.
Pickering, a former North Melbourne and Geelong player, linked Smith with the Cats as a potential new home.
Pickering said he "loved" North Melbourne but was critical of their facilities, which will be replaced next month.
"It's a critical year for his career and he doesn't think, after two years of frustration with his ankle and hamstring (injuries), that North is the right spot for him right now," Pickering said on SEN.

"It's got nothing to do with the people there, it's to do with the lack of facilities - which they are trying to get in place."

Regarding Jesse Smith, I reckon he'll slip down to us especially if we loose Macca. Melbourne already have their sights set on Luke Ball and none of the other clubs really need a defender (bar Carlton), so there's a pretty good chance he'll come to Brisbane, IMO. ;)

I know that he's one of the AFL's brightest prospects, but each team has it's own needs, and no one really desperately needs a quality defender, bar Port, but their defence will always be shit even if you add Scarlo to the mix. :D
If Macca leaves, it'll leave a big hole in our defence because he's the one that usually does all that mopping up when the ball spills out, so we'll be chasing Smith hard. ;)

A Tassie guy Brisbane have looked at. Picture here (http://www-static.sportingpulse.com/pics/00/00/60/81/608197_1_O.jpg)

DAVIES ATTRACTS HUGE INTEREST FROM AFL CLUBS

It does not hurt to have excelled in testing at the AFL draft camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last week.
Apart from being enormously talented on the field, the Tassie Mariner and North Hobart defender demonstrated he had what every AFL club desires in a player -- a big motor.
Davies proved that by claiming the second-best effort in the punishing beep test and a top 10 spot in the gut-wrenching 3km time trial.
``The time trial was pretty tough,'' Davies said yesterday.
``I came 10th with a time of 10 minutes 22 seconds. I was really happy with that because I wanted to go under 10m30s and I achieved that,'' he said.
``The camp was fantastic. The recruiters have seen us play so it was a great opportunity to show ourselves in a different scenario with the testing and interviews.''
Aside from his physical exploits, Davies has been interviewed by grand final combatants, Geelong and St Kilda, as well as Sydney, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, Richmond, Collingwood, North Melbourne, Melbourne, Brisbane and Carlton.
``They just want to get a gauge on who you are, what your personality is like, what your background is and that sort of thing,'' Davies said.
``It's hard to read what they are thinking. You just hope they like you and maybe give you an opportunity.''
Davies was at the AIS this time last year, but not as a footballer -- as a cricketer.
``I went over to have my bowling action analysed, and the draft camp was on at the same time,'' Davies said.
The Tasmanian under-19 cricket representative has since shelved bat and ball in favour of footy.
``I got selected in the [cricket] under-19s again this year but with my commitment to football, which is my priority, I had to give cricket a rest,'' Davies said.

Probably won't slip, but I reckon clubs will shy away from him because of his shitty injury record. He's snapped his hammys like 6 times in the past 2 or 3 odd years. With JayMac out of town, then Vossy will probably have his eyes set on Smith. And Smith...Goddard?!...You've GOT to be joking. :D

Callum Bartlett is the player I want us to pick up at 27. Is a real talent and has struggled with injuries this year! I really think he is gonna be a gun and with him Rich and Redden our midfield would look freaky! Has very good pace and great skills. Would pass up Ball and Smith for him. Only 179 cm but is a Lukey Power clone. Can kick just over 50 metres but always hits his targets. Likes to lead by example and do the hard things. Will try and find a pic on google if I can. Imho would of been a 1st round pick barring injuries!

Anthony Delberello, Mitchell Ducan or Troy Taylor are the ones that I'm looking at if we don't get either Smith or Ball with Pick 27. All medium forwards and State Representatives, very good kick at goal and work well as a small forward.

Callum Bartlett (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 179cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 19/06/91

Rated strongly by several recruiters, but recent injury worries have placed a question mark over the goalkicking midfielder.
Draft range: 30-50

Allen Christensen (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 176cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 19/05/91
Recruited from: Lara
Some believe the prolific ball-winner is a genuine top 10 pick, but he is more likely to go deep into the first-round, or early in the second.
Draft range: 10-25

Travis Colyer (Claremont, WA)
Height: 175cm, Weight: 73kg, DOB: 24/8/91

Height: 176cm, Weight: 68kg, DOB: 10/09/91
Recruited from: PEGS

Andrew Hooper (North Ballarat Rebels, VIC)
Height: 172cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 18/01/91

Draft range: 20-rookie

Lewis Jetta (Swan Districts, WA)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 72kg, DOB: 04/05/89

Draft range: 4-20

Dylan McNeil (Murray Bushrangers, NSW)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 20/03/91

Draft range: 35-late

Josh Thomas (Gold Coast, QLD)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 01/10/91
Recruited from: Broadbeach
Opted not to sign up with Gold Coast and instead take his chances in this year's draft. It appears to be the right move for the classy ball-winner, as he has attracted keen interest.
Draft range: 20-60

Jason Tutt (NSW/ACT Rams)
Height: 176cm, Weight: 72kg, DOB: 15/05/91
Recruited from: Ainslie

Draft range: late-rookie

Derick Wanganeen (Port Adelaide, SA)
Height: 172cm, Weight: 63kg, DOB: 05/02/91

Change of mind...I want Christensen now.

He's certainly better than a rookie spot though! He got injured at the draft camp, but if he hadn't he'd be rated higher.

Topped the 3km time trial - Jarryn finished in the top few too from memory.

Draft range: Late
Mark Hutchings (East Perth, WA)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 25/5/91

What type of player are you?
A running player with the ability to play half-back/half-forward and in the middle. I’ve just started to play in the midfield with East Fremantle.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
Sam Fisher and Corey Enright because of their ability to set up a lot of run out of defence resulting in a lot of forward attacks.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
The ability to play on talls or smalls. I can run and carry the ball, have good skills, versatility and pace.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
Opposite-side foot skills, sustained four quarter efforts and I want to keep working on my strength and fitness.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
Fremantle because my family supported a WA team close to home.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My dad, because he has always been a big part of my football life and coached my club team for five years. He gives me good constructive advice on how I could improve to become a better player. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86362/default.aspx

HAWTHORN has delisted Mitch Thorp and rookies Haydn Kiel and Tim Walsh in preparation for this year's NAB AFL Draft.
Thorp had one year to run on his contract but has been plagued by injury, only managing two senior games in his three seasons with the club.
Originally drafted with pick No.6 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, the Hawks had high hopes for 194cm Thorp to develop into a key player but after undergoing foot surgery earlier this year after playing just one match in round two the 20-year-old was unable to break back into the side.
“Unfortunately, Mitch has been limited by injury in the first three years and as a consequence, has had little opportunity to play senior footy at Hawthorn,” recruiter Chris Pelchen said.
“Mitch requested to be considered for a trade, but unfortunately this was not able to be achieved during trade week.
“After further consultation with Mitch and his management, we felt it was best for Mitch’s interests to seek a fresh start at another club.
Mitch Thorp, Tim Walsh and Haydn Kiel have been delisted while third-year rookie Matthew Suckling has been elevated to the senior list.
The Hawks have also upgraded third year rookie Matthew Suckling to the senior list.
Hawthorn has five selections in the November NAB AFL National Draft (currently picks 39, 46, 57, 58, 69).

Key defender Matt Maguire's career with St Kilda has ended on 99 games.

The 25-year-old has been delisted after injuries ruined his final few years with the Saints and left him stranded short of the 100-game milestone.

Maguire has played just 14 senior games since badly breaking his leg late in 2006 and did not manage to earn AFL selection at all in 2009.

In the 2007 and 2008 seasons, he was held back by foot fractures.

He was injury-free for most of this season, but could not force his way up from the VFL.

He is expected to seek to continue his career at another club through either November's national draft or the pre-season draft in December.

Maguire's delisting follows the retirement of veteran Saints backman Max Hudghton, who was also unable to earn selection for the grand final loss to Geelong.

Fellow tall defender Zac Dawson has been promoted from the rookie list to the primary list for next season.

The former Hawthorn discard was a surprise selection in the senior team at the start of the season, but cemented his spot, playing 23 games including the grand final.

Luke Miles has also been upgraded from the rookie list to the primary list.

The Saints had previously delisted injury-hit youngster Jarryd Allen, Irishman Colm Begley, who has returned to his homeland, and Eljay Connors.

They also traded Xavier Clarke to Brisbane Lions, while bringing in Andrew Lovett from Essendon and Brett Peake from Fremantle. http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26277177-5018851,00.html

What type of player are you?
I am an agile, hard working, key position tall. I play forward and down back and I think I’m quite versatile. I’m a team player and I always try to do my best for my role in a team.

Which AFL player do you resemble, and why?
I think I resemble Nick Riewoldt because he is a hard working CHF, he has similar build to myself and he played CHB as a junior in the under 18 championship. I aspire to be as good as he is.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My strengths as a footballer are my work rate (endurance), my versatility and my discipline in training and preparation.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
I would like to improve my kicking, my core strength and speed off the mark.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them? I support Carlton. I have barracked for them since I was 4 years old and I came to support them as I liked the Carlton jumper at that age. From then on I have supported them.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?

My grandfather, Harvey Stevens. Harvey played for the Bulldogs '54 premiership side. He always talks to me about footy and comes to watch me play. Harvey grew up without parents, supporting a family from the age of 13. He is an absolute inspiration to me.

RICHMOND has delisted Graham Polak after he failed to convince the club he could make a regular contribution at AFL level next season.
Polak, 25, played the last two games of the season in his fight back from life-threatening injuries sustained in a June 2008 tram accident, but was one of nine players officially cut by the club on Friday ahead of the first list lodgement deadline.
Former first-round pick Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls has also been shown the door after just 13 games, while Cleve Hughes, Nathan Brown, Mark Coughlan, Kayne Pettifer, Adam Pattison, Dean Putt and Jarrod Silvester round out the cull.
Joel Bowden and Kane Johnson retired earlier in the year and Andrew Raines and Jay Schulz were traded out in a huge reshuffle at Punt Road ahead of Damien Hardwick's first year in charge.
Richmond general manager of football Craig Cameron said the club would attempt to take advantage of the AFL's new rules which would allow Polak to be added to the rookie list as a mature-age player.
"We will investigate the opportunity of offering Graham a position on our rookie list through the 2009 rookie draft," Cameron said. "But obviously this will not be confirmed until after the draft has taken place.
"We thank these players for the contributions they have made at Richmond and we wish them all the best for the future."
Small forward Robin Nahas and ruckman Andrew Browne have been elevated to the senior list after making their debuts in 2009.
Former Port Adelaide defender Mitchell Farmer joined the club during the recent exchange period.
Richmond now has selections three, 19, 35, 44, 51, 67, 72 and 83 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, which will be held on Thursday, November 26.

Carlton
- The Blues have finalised their first lodgement, removing utility Greg Bentley from their rookie list. Bentley played five games in 2009 after 21 in three seasons with Port Adelaide.
The 22-year-old's departure is one of six from the rookie list, with Lachlan Hill, Darren Pfeiffer and Luke Stanton also cut and Sam Jacobs and Aaron Joseph elevated to senior spots.
Jeff Garlett and David Ellard have been retained.
Nick Stevens announced his retirement (http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86485/default.aspx) on Thursday.
North Melbourne
- The club has officially parted ways with frustrated half-back Jesse Smith, who knocked back the offer of a new contract and was unsuccessful in his attempts to be traded.
Smith, 23, had not played a senior game since round five, 2008 because of hamstring and ankle injuries and leaves the Roos with 27 matches to his name.
He was recruited as a father-son selection in 2004.
"It is just an unfortunate situation that occurs from time to time in this industry. It is disappointing for everyone, but it's something that occurs across the entire competition," chief of football Donald McDonald said this month. Port Adelaide
- Wade Thompson has been upgraded to the senior list, with Danny Meyer accepting another rookie list contract. NSW scholarship player Jordan Johns has also been added to the rookie list. Chad Cornes joins Warren Tredrea on veteran status.
"Wade showed us some really exciting things early last season, and with a full pre-season we think he can fill an important role in our team in 2010," general manager of football operations Peter Rohde said of Thompson.
West Coast
- Jamie McNamara has been delisted after 19 games for the club while Ryan Davis will try his luck in the NAB AFL Draft after rejecting the offer to stay on the rookie list for a third season.
Callum Wilson, Will Sullivan and Lewis Stevenson will remain on the rookie list for a third year, and Adam Cockie a second. Ashley Arrowsmith and Liam Bedford have not been retained.
Retired premiership player Tyson Stenglein will be delisted after the draft, allowing the Eagles to participate in next year's NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86543/default.aspx

West Coast won't make a play for de-listed St Kilda defender Matt Maguire in the national and pre-season AFL drafts.

Maguire, who has played just 14 games over the past three seasons after suffering a badly broken leg late in 2006, was axed from St Kilda on Thursday after 99 games.

The Eagles will use picks 7, 22 and 23 in November's national draft and will hold vacant a spot on their list for a mature-age player in the pre-season draft.

But West Coast football operations manager Neale Daniher said 25-year-old Maguire was not on their radar given his injury woes.

"We'll go to list management and talk through (about) Matt and make a decision but I wouldn't have thought Matt would be the top of our list," Daniher said on Friday.

"You would have thought (his injury is still a worry) otherwise he would still be on St Kilda's list.

"We'll have a look at all the de-listings.

"We'll probably take an experienced player given we've got three young guys to pick in the national draft and then we might have four or five rookies to come in as well.

"We'll probably go with someone with a bit more experience given the inexperience coming in at the other end."

Meanwhile, Daniher slammed the AFL's decision to schedule the Eagles away games in round one and 22.

Daniher said it was unfair to start and end the season away from home and was especially critical of the round 22 match against Geelong at Skilled Stadium.

Not only do the 2009 premiers have the luxury of playing at home, but they will have had two days extra break than the Eagles.

"We are disappointed about round 22, not only we are away but the fact they play Friday night the week before (and we play the Sunday)," he said.

"We played St Kilda early last year where we came off a six-day (break) and had to travel over there and they had an extra two days and we got belted.

"It does have a big impact."

However, Daniher said overall the club had been given a fairer draw than it was dealt last season. http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26281393-5018851,00.html

THE spluttering AFL career of former first-round draft pick Mitch Thorp will be revived at another club in the forthcoming draft period, according to his manager Liam Pickering.
After two failed years with the Hawks, the 20-year-old was officially delisted last week.
Taken with pick six in the 2006 draft - one pick ahead of Geelong's dual premiership star Joel Selwood - the ex-Tasmanian has battled osteitis pubis, hip, knee and ankle problems that restricted him to just two senior games. Last season, the 194-centimetre forward broke a bone in a foot.
Despite having a year to run on his contract, Pickering said yesterday that Thorp wanted a fresh start at a new club in 2010 and opted to put himself up for trade.
A deal could not be struck during trade week, but Pickering said Thorp's ''talent alone is good enough'' to have other clubs interested as the national and pre-season drafts approach.
''It's going to be a pretty tough forward line to break into with [Lance] Franklin and [Jarryd] Roughead [and] he's had injuries, but I think he's a very talented young player,'' Pickering said on radio station SEN.
''A 20-year-old key position forward and he didn't go at pick six for no reason … he's a talented player and he will get an opportunity, I'm convinced of that.''
Another of Pickering's clients, injury-prone former North Melbourne defender Jesse Smith, is also hoping to resurrect his career at a new club.
After five seasons at the Kangaroos that produced just 27 games Smith was being targeted by as many as five clubs, Pickering said.
''Everyone knows his talent, but there are clubs that may not [be interested] because of his medical history,'' he said.
''[New coach] Brad Scott spoke to Jesse and asked him to reconsider his position,'' Kangaroos football operations chief Donald McDonald said after Smith walked out of Arden Street.
The club revealed it could not broker an adequate deal that would have given the 23-year-old a fresh start ahead of the draft period.

Carlton could provide discarded St Kilda defender Matt Maguire with an AFL lifeline, according to his former teammate Robert Harvey, one of the Blues' assistant coaches.

Harvey, who has been promoted to a full-time assistant coach after serving last season as development coach, said Maguire could be invited to train with the Blues in the lead-up to the national and pre-season drafts.

Maguire, 25, was delisted recently by the Saints after failing to add to his 99 career games in 2009 despite overcoming serious leg injuries.

Harvey, who played a club record 383 games for St Kilda before joining Carlton, said the Blues would consider inviting Maguire for a trial.

"We'll consider maybe asking Matty Maguire to train with us, but (as for other players delisted by clubs) ... we're pretty happy with the list we've got," Harvey said as the Blues began pre-season training.

"We cover most bases with young guys, we think, and the holes that we have got we think we're capable of covering them."

Carlton's biggest challenge when it comes to covering holes will be who to use as targets in attack in 2010 after Brendan Fevola was traded to Brisbane Lions.

Fevola topped the Blues' goal kicking from 2003-09, twice won the Coleman Medal as the league's leading goal kicker and bagged 89 majors in 2009, after 99 in 2008.

Harvey said Carlton's re-think was not just a case of replacing Fevola with another player.

"Obviously you can't just replace a guy that kicks the amount of goals that he does," he said.

"It will be more of a restructure of the whole set-up and that's another thing that we're excited about.

"You don't replace that guy. You can't replace 100 goals a year, but three or four guys possibly can and that's what we'll be looking at.

"It might make us more unpredictable and we hope that's a good thing ... there will be some restructuring, but who or what that is we don't know yet." http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,26295147-5018851,00.html

Former AFL footballer Andrew Krakouer out of jail
STAFF REPORTER

November 2, 2009 - 1:04PM

West Australian footballer and former Richmond forward Andrew Krakouer is a free man after his request for parole was approved.
The Prisoner’s Review Board approved Mr Krakouer’s application for parole on September 21.
Krakouer was sentenced to a minimum 16 months in jail for a serious assault in Fremantle in late 2006.
On the night of December 22, Krakouer was in Fremantle when he started a fight with Justin Martin, 24.
He pinned Martin to the ground and sat on his stomach where he proceeded to repeatedly punch him.
After Martin managed to break free, Krakouer pursued his victim, caught up with him, brought him to the ground and continued to punch and kick him.
The man sustained a fractured eye socket and lacerations above the eye and was hospitalised in intensive care.
The Prisoner Review Board decided that the risk to the safety of the community will not be compromised by Mr Krakouer’s release and he was considered likely to comply with his parole conditions.
Krakouer, from a famous footballing family, was delisted from the AFL after playing 102 matches and kicking 102 goals for Richmond.

102 games and 102 goals...averages a dead set 1 goal a game which I like from HF/Mid. He's only small, 176cm and 74kg so we could use some of his speed up forward. Only still 26 and worth the punt, only problem is his off-field behaviour including jail but hey, he took the chance with big bad Fev, why not AJ Krakouer. Also his family has a good sporting history with his father Jim and uncle Phil also playing AFL Footy. ;)

THE TOP four of this year's NAB AFL Draft appears settled.

With just 22 days until the 24th AFL Draft, the names Tom Scully (Dandenong Stingrays), Jack Trengove (Sturt), Dustin Martin (Bendigo Pioneers) and Anthony Morabito (Peel Thunder) seem likely to fill the first four spots.

Melbourne has the first two picks, with Scully and Trengove almost certain to become Demons.

Although Scully firmed as the No.1 pick during the 2009 NAB AFL under-18 championships - and still remains the hot tip - the brilliant form of Trengove in this year's senior SANFL finals could see the South Australian shift from No.2 to No.1.

Regardless of who is No.1 and No.2, it will be a massive surprise if Scully and Trengove are not Demons by the conclusion of the meeting on Thursday November 26.

Richmond has the third pick, with Martin strongly linked to Punt Rd.

He has continued to rise up the pecking order throughout the year and this was only further enhanced with his outstanding efforts at the NAB AFL Draft Camp in late September/early October.

Rounding out the quarter is Morabito, the run-and-carry midfielder and versatile 190cm tall who has been likened to Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes.

Some recruiters believe the Western Australian has the qualities to be a No.1 draft pick, but his destination appears to be Fremantle.

BUCKLEY, Ablett and Power. Three of the biggest names in football and they all want to play next year at new clubs.
Of course, the Ablett is Luke not Gary, the Buckley used to be a Demon called Simon and the Power, Sam, is keen to play anywhere but would love to join his big brother Luke at the Lions.
Sydney premiership player Ablett has not been delisted by the Swans but is out of contract and yet to have been offered a new deal. He may look to the draft to find a new home.
Buckley could end up playing for Buckley, as Collingwood is one of a clutch of clubs including North Melbourne, Richmond and Carlton, that are interested in the former Demon.
Clubs last week trimmed lists to make space before this year's draft. Clubs will trim lists further as they attempt to make space to secure as many young players as possible in this year's draft before next year's drafts are diluted by the priority picks given to the new clubs, accentuated by the fact this year's draft is already shallow.
The pool of players for this year's draft, which will be held on November 26, is smaller than normal with the draft age being raised from 17 to 18 and the Gold Coast already cherry-picking some of that talent through its priority access to 17-year-olds.
Luke Ball remains the big-ticket item potentially available for one of the drafts should he choose to quit Moorabbin.
Jesse Smith quit North Melbourne believing his chances of overcoming a persistent ankle problem were best served at a better resourced club.
Graham Polak hopes to be offered a mature rookie position at Richmond should no other club surprise and take him ahead of that. His former teammate Mark Coughlan is equally looking for another home but, like Demon Russell Robertson, who is seeking to convince clubs that age has not wearied him, Coughlan must convince that his body is not spent.
Power, who began his career at the Bulldogs before being traded to North, was delisted but is understood to be of interest to the Lions where his brother plays.
Power's North teammate Daniel Harris would equally be of interest. Harris presents the classic situation for clubs considering a recycled player - they know what they are going to get. With Harris that's a player good at getting first hands on the ball, but one not quick over the ground.
Brisbane has already cut Joel Macdonald and Rhan Hooper. Both lacked currency in trade week but that may be otherwise at the draft table.
Former Saint Matt Maguire is expected to be offered the chance to train at Carlton, while the Blues have already asked former Adelaide player Aaron Kite to train with them.

b_lions16
05-11-2009, 05:15 PM
CARLTON coach Brett Ratten has confirmed discarded St Kilda defender Matt Maguire will be given the chance to re-ignite his stalled AFL career at Visy Park.

Maguire, 25, was delisted by the Saints after failing to make a senior appearance in 2009, but Ratten said the versatile big man would be given the chance to prove his body was still up to the rigours of AFL football after a wretched run with injury in recent years.

"Steven Icke spoke to his manager, Paul Connors, and he'll come down and train with us," Ratten told afl.com.au exclusively.

"It will give us a chance to just to see where his body is at and to have a look at him with our group.

"I suppose like all players that you get down to train with you, they get to put their best case forward and if he does everything right he'll be a chance."

A small group of mostly-inexperienced Blues kicked off pre-season training last Monday, but Maguire will likely begin his bid for an AFL lifeline when the majority of senior players go back to training next Monday.

After fighting back from a horror leg fracture late in the 2006 season, Maguire was beset by stress fracture issues in his foot which limited him to just 14 senior games in 2007 and 2008.

He managed to stay healthy for most of the 2009 campaign, but the emergence of former Hawk key defender Zac Dawson saw him to confined to the VFL for the entirety of the club's season.

The Blues face the challenge of reshaping their forward line following the controversial departure of Brendan Fevola and Ratten said Maguire's versatility was appealing.

"He's a tall who can play forward and back," he said.

"He came out of a team that played in the grand final and was a kick away from actually winning it. He couldn't force his way in there, but he had a fairly good season [in the VFL] so we'll take the opportunity to have a look at him."

Maguire, a second-round draft pick (21st overall) in 2001, was left stranded on a career games total of 99 when the Saints let him go.

Meanwhile, speculation the club had been looking at former Melbourne high flyer Russell Robertson has proved unfounded with Ratten revealing former Crows speedster Aaron Kite was the only other discard the Blues would consider ahead of December's pre-season draft.

"He's already here and started with the boys this week," he said of the former Calder Cannon who Adelaide picked 71st overall at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft.

"He's really quick, is 190cm and can play off half-back so we'll have a look at him too."

Power is no good...but Luke may have the power to get him to the lions
I wouldn't mind Simon Buckley tho, it was crazy for Melbourne to delist him along with Valenti! He's gunna become a gun one day so we should take a punt on him. ;)

The top six picks are considered a lock 20 days out from the AFL national draft.
Industry intelligence from a range of recruiting sources paints a predictable picture, even if the league will do its best to build the suspense.

Melbourne, as much as it is sworn to secrecy, will take midfielders Tom Scully and Jack Trengove as its "dynamic duo" with picks No. 1 and No. 2. The only question remains who will be picked first.

Scully is considered the best player in draft, but several rival recruiters are tipping Trengove will be No. 1 simply because he is better equipped to handle the pressure that goes with the tag.

Trengove has played senior football in the SANFL and the Demons could be mindful of putting Scully, the prodigiously talented 18-year-old from the Dandenong Stingrays, at the mercy of the same scrutiny as last year's No. 1 pick, Jack Watts (http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,24724373-5017925,00.html).

But the Melbourne fans, and recruiting staff, won't be too fussed either way. If they could, the Demons would name them joint picks 1.5 and be done with it.

Richmond seems certain to take Bendigo midfielder Dustin Martin and Fremantle has its heart set on Anthony Morabito, an Adam Goodes clone from Peel Thunder.

Martin's standing improved throughout the year and his potential was underlined at draft camp.

Morabito has the freakish qualities of a No. 1 pick and the Dockers are thrilled he is likely to get through to them.

North Melbourne is also poised to look close to home, taking Geelong Falcon Ben Cunnington with pick No. 5. The All-Australian has clean hands and is strong overhead, with some likening him to former North skipper Adam Simpson.

Rounding out what appears to be a top six set in stone is leaping forward Gary Rohan heading to Sydney. Rohan's body is still immature, but he is an exciting talent and Sydney needs forwards after the departure of Barry Hall and Michael O'Loughlin.

From there, it gets more difficult to pick. West Coast is almost certain to follow Fremantle's lead and go local with No. 7, with Lewis Jetta (Swan Districts), Kane Lucas (East Fremantle) and Bradley Sheppard (East Fremantle) believed to be in the mix.

Sources say Jetta may have the edge in the three-way fight to stay close to home.

He has an X-factor the others don't, even if he might be more of a gamble.

Port Adelaide, having traded Shaun Burgoyne, holds the key to the rest of the first round. The Power has picks No. 8 and No. 9 at its disposal and can dash the hopes of others with their tactics at the lower end of the top 10.

The mail suggests Port wants a key forward and a midfielder.

Expect it to take Gippsland's John Butcher, regarded as the brightest key-position prospect, as a long-term replacement for Warren Tredrea.

That would dash the hopes of potential suitors Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

Port would thentop up its midfield with Calder Cannon Jake Melsham, a blow to Essendon, which has pick 10 and is believed to be eyeing the Essendon Grammar student.

Smith looks like a no go with us so I wonder if there are any other decent defenders around

Josh Thomas or Allen Christensen for Pick 27, both medium midfielders/forwards and can fit well into our team, IMO.

THEY'RE not related yet NAB AFL Draft hopefuls Mitch, Scott and Troy Taylor share a common bond.
The trio represented Northern Territory in this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships: Scott was co-captain, Troy the eye-catching forward and Mitch the rock in defence.
Troy and Mitch are indigenous and Scott is Caucasian, while each has his own story.

First of all, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves and where you hail from in the Northern Territory?
Scott: I was born and bred in Alice Springs. I've lived there for 18 years and relocated to Darwin this year. I did all of my high school at Alice Springs. I work for AFLNT. I'm a really sporty person and I've represented Alice Springs in soccer and cricket.

Troy: I've lived in Darwin all of my life. I was born in Western Australia, but moved to Darwin when I was three or four months old. I moved to Alice Springs at the start of this year. I play for South Kangaroos in Alice and for Wanderers in Darwin.

Mitch: I grew up in Darwin. I was born and bred up there. I did all of my primary schooling in Darwin and went to a boarding school, Shalom Christian College in Townsville, Queensland. I played a little bit of rugby, but I like footy the most. I didn't really play footy as my first sport. I played soccer when I was younger.

Have you developed a bond because of your surname?
Mitch: Yeah, I knew Scott, the same as Troy, from junior footy. I also played junior basketball with Troy.

Troy: A lot of people ask if I'm related to Mitch, but not as many ask if I'm related to Scott (laughs). I've played a lot of basketball with Mitch, so yeah [we do have a bond].

Scott: One memory is when we played under-13s in 2004 and when we were getting our guernseys, the lady handing them out thought we were all brothers. It is a pretty good bond and the fact Troy plays full-forward, I'm in the middle and Mitch is full-back - there is a Taylor in each section of the ground.

You all have aspirations to play at the highest level. How did you find having recruiters watching you?
Scott: It's always a bit daunting and nervous, because you always have the recruiters and scouts in the back of your mind. At the end of the day, you have to go out there and play your own game. As a leader, that's what you have to tell the others - focus on your own game. Don't worry about the outside.

Troy: When I heard about recruiters talking about me, from (coach) Brett (Hand), I really wanted to pull my finger out a bit more. I feel a bit more nervous, because there is a bit of pressure on me.

Who do you barrack for and who are your heroes in the AFL?
Scott: I go for Port Adelaide, but my favourite player at the moment is Gary Ablett and I like Kane Cornes.

Troy: My team is St Kilda and one of my favourite players is Nick Dal Santo.

Mitch: I go for the Eagles and I like big Lynchy, Quinten Lynch. My favourite player is Ablett, he is a superstar.

If you guys are drafted, you are going to have to relocate from the Northern Territory. How does that sit with you?
Mitch: It would be a dream come true and hopefully I'd still see them (Troy and Scott) or play against them or with them. It'd be really hard for me to move, leaving all of my family behind and moving to another environment - a bigger environment. I'd be a bit scared, too.

Troy: I'd be a bit homesick and get frustrated. It'd be a bit scary too going somewhere and not knowing anyone there, but you've got to get over it.

Scott: I've already relocated to Darwin, so I've done a bit of a step, but moving interstate and into a footy environment would be a totally different experience. I think I'd cope alright.

During the championships, who were some of the players that stood out to you?
Scott: A bloke I played against for NSW/ACT, Dylan McNeil. I was standing next to him in the centre and just his physical presence was .

Troy: I reckon Blayne Wilson was pretty good. He played on me.

Mitch: Jack Darling - a big bloke from WA. I copped a few whacks off him (laughs).

How has your Northern Territory coach Brett Hand helped with your football?
Scott: Brett has been a big help in bonding our team. The team structure has been easy to adapt to and he's been really positive and good for the side.

Mitch: He's been a pretty good coach, really good. He's the best one I've come across. He's easy to approach and if you've got a problem, he'll try to help you out.

Troy: Brett is a good bloke and he's helped me out a lot. He's one of the best coaches I've had so far.

And finally, what did you take out of the championships and what are you hoping for from here?
Scott: Playing at a higher level makes you learn different things. Playing against bigger bodies and taking the experiences out of the championships - we had a lot of good times.

Troy: They were one some of the hardest games I've played for the Thunder, but I hope to go far with my footy and I'm just going to keep at it until I get somewhere.

Mitch: It's been great to mix and meet a lot of new blokes from the Territory and you get to play on other players from Western Australia and you could be playing on the next Chris Judd or (Bryce) Gibbs.

[I]What Northern Territory under-18 coach Brett Hand said about the Taylors:
Scott: He's just a thorough workhorse. He's a really professional bloke at this stage. He's been involved in the NTIS (Northern Territory Institute of Sport) for a couple of years now, so he's improved on his deficiencies now. His hard-ball gets are fantastic and I think he has been a shining light as a leader, especially against the division one teams - he's matched it with them. The boys look up to him. Put him in a full-time environment and you couldn't go wrong with him.

Troy: Troy came into our program a couple of months ago. He was new and green and he's just got the cat-like features. He floats across the ground and does the unexpected. He's extremely skilful and is laconic, but he reads the play really well. He has the ability to do the special thing. He's the x-factor. He needs to work on his work rate and his fitness.

Mitch: Mitch is a breath of fresh air. He's a real character - on and off the field. He refuses to be beaten and his second and third efforts are just great. He reads the play well and is a lovely long kick. He's a very hard worker on the track. He has a presence and loves to run with the footy. He needs to work on his marking a bit, but he is very versatile. I think he is a readymade rookie right now and I think he could make it, given the opportunity. He's been through some tough family situations as well recently. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86711/default.aspx

DISCARDED Hawk Mitch Thorp will train with Melbourne during the pre-season in a effort to kick-start his AFL career.

Thorp, who turns 21 on Christmas Day, managed only two games for Hawthorn over the past three seasons with a series of injuries and indifferent form limiting his impact.

His manager, Liam Pickering, confirmed today the 194cm forward and one-time No.6 draft pick was hopeful of being selected by the Demons in December's pre-season draft.

"He's a good fit for them, he's a key position player," Pickering said.

Former Tiger Dean Putt will train with Hawthorn, ex-Bulldog Guy O'Keefe at Geelong and former Roo Matt Riggio at Fremantle in the pre-season.

DUSTIN Martin says he was born to play AFL. While some could assume the highly rated teen is arrogant, he's just a confident kid, writes Mark Robinson.

THERE'S a fine line between confidence, arrogance and reality, and Dustin Martin doesn't seem to be ruffled by any moniker.
The probable No. 3 pick - which points him at Richmond - is so immersed in what he wants and his self-belief, that his philosophy may well raise eyebrows even before he plays an AFL game.
This guy, who was named centre in the All Australian under-18 team, is young, brutally honest and a school leaver after Year 9, partly because his parents split and dad was living in Sydney.
He talks slowly and softly about his footy, bluntly about his life and when he tells you he believes he was born to play AFL, it's difficult not to tell him there is no such a thing.
Whatever generation we are up to, say hello to Gen Next.
"I reckon I was born to play AFL," he said.
Bit arrogant?
"I don't think I'm arrogant at all, like, it's just something I want. I want to play AFL, that's all I want to do.
"I just want it so bad. I don't care where I play, as a long as I get the opportunity."
He has spoken to 12 clubs, and not Melbourne, which doesn't surprise him.
He, like everyone, expects Tom Scully and Jack Trengove to go No. 1 and No. 2.
He has met Richmond twice, before and during the draft camp.
"I think they're pretty keen," he said.
"No one has said they'll take me yet. If it's Richmond, it will be awesome, over the moon."
If it is Richmond, the expectations on him - as they are on Trent Cotchin - will be, well, Richmond-like: Please, please, deliver.
He says he is not daunted. "They've got a lot of young players coming through, I reckon it would be unreal to help the club get up and going. If I get there, I'll work as hard as I can pre-season and get as fit as I can.
"And if I get really fit I reckon I'm a chance to play first game. I've got the ability, I just have to work on my fitness, get super-fit.
"I really want to do this. I'll just do my best and do what the coaches think; I'm not better than anyone else; I'll just work as hard as I can for the team."
Martin was born and bred in Castlemaine.
His dad Shane is a Maori who arrived in Australia when he was 21, and played at Harcourt and then Kangaroo Flat in the Bendigo league.
"He (Dad) wasn't any good at footy, and I don't think mum's (Kathy) played any sport," he said, wondering where the talent came from.
As for Martin's desire for the contest, which has wowed recruiters, that comes from the old man.
"When he 0used to play footy he reckons he was a real hard nut, he reckons he used to clean blokes up," he laughs.
"Everyone knew him as Kiwi. Apparently in his first game he kicked a goal for the opposition because he didn't know what he was doing."
While playing under-16s footy, Martin and Castlemaine High learnt they had irreconcilable differences, forcing dad to move him to Sydney.
"I was playing up at school. I didn't like school, so dad made me move up with him to pull me into line a little bit," he said.
"I just wasn't a fan of school. I hated it, but I regret it now, I wish I had stayed at school."
His future is footy and personal training, in which he has certificate three and is chasing certificate four.
At the draft camp, where clubs probe and poke players like laboratory rats, Martin expected questions about his schooling.
But not what Port Adelaide delivered.
"I think I was talking to Port Adelaide and they asked me about when I left school and stuff like that," he said.
"Sometimes I'm a little bit embarrassed to say I left that early, but, yeah, Port Adelaide asked me if I was dumb and I said no."
They used word dumb?
"Yeah."
Harsh?
"I don't mind."
In Sydney, he worked at dad's transport business and at his dad's girlfriend's sports apparel business, at the same time having a run with the Campbelltown Blues under-18s. He was rewarded with a senior game at the end of the season.
He returned to Victoria at the end of '07, played senior football for Castlemaine and the last four games for the Bendigo Pioneers in 2008, and most of this year with the Pioneers, where he was runner-up in the best-and-fairest.
Martin is an inside player who wins his own ball, is accomplished outside, loves to try to break tackles, was rated the second-best kick at the draft camp - with both feet - and was second with 2.89sec over 20m.
In other words, he is quick, tough, and uses the ball.
Someone close to him described him as Lenny Hayes with a touch more polish.
Hayes is 186cm and 85kg. Martin is 187cm and 87kg.
Martin also likes Joel Selwood, another Bendigo product.
"I like Lenny Hayes and Joel Selwood," he said.
"Joel is definitely similar to the way I want to play, just the way he wins the footy, gets it out, gets it again, his decision-making and vision, and without the footy he's really good."
For Bendigo, Martin averaged 24.7 touches (9.7 contested) and 115 SuperCoach points in 11 games.
For Vic Country in the under-18 championships, his numbers slightly dropped to 21.4 (7.2) and 111 points in five games.
At Bendigo, he was ranked No. 1 in disposals, contested possessions, clearances, inside 50s and score assists.
In the final under-18 match of the national championships, against Western Australia, the whole football industry watched Martin gather 28 touches, five clearances and an astonishing 193 SuperCoach points.
His All Australian selection didn't explode his head.
"I wasn't, `Oh my God, I'm centre for the All Australian'. I just got on with playing footy," he said.
It's the same when peers tell him he's going to Richmond.
"I hear that all the time, but anything can happen on draft day," he said.
Still, he thinks he will be a Tiger. But when football is your gateway to life, even the very confident can get very vulnerable.
"I'm scared of not getting drafted," he said.
"When I'm lying down in bed, I think, `it would be just so s--- if I didn't get drafted'."
He need not worry.

IF IT was not for his mother, Cobden teenager Gary Rohan might have been one of those freakishly talented bush players who never chanced his hand in the big time. Cut from several elite junior development squads, Rohan was adamant he would pass up the chance when the Geelong Falcons asked him back this year, being content to play Hampden league football.
That was until his mother, Belinda, had her say on the matter.
"I had always been told, 'No, you are not up to it', so I thought I didn't want to get told I wasn't good enough again," he said of being asked back to the Falcons.
"But my Mum told me to go down there, and have a good pre-season. She said if it didn't work out for me, then I could always come back and play with Cobden again."
Fast forward a full football season that included some freakish performances with the Falcons, an MVP for Vic Country and All-Australian selection, and Rohan's rise to prominence has been extraordinary.
That should be validated on November 26 when the 18-year-old is selected among the top 10 players in the AFL national draft.
Geelong Falcons regional manager Michael Turner rates Rohan the most exciting TAC Cup footballer he has encountered in the past 15 years.
"He is a very exciting young kid," Turner said.
"He just does some sensational things that take your eye. Particularly early in the season at Skilled Stadium, he did some things that I have never seen any other TAC Cup kids do."
He said Rohan tapered off a little towards the end of the season after a hectic year of travelling from his Cobden base.
"Gary has only been in our system for about seven or eight months, and has been only able to train with us once a week," he said.
"With these country kids, and I have seen it time and time again, there is massive improvement once they get into the AFL system."

IT'S 1.30am in the last week of winter and Ben Cunnington cuts a lone figure wading in the Gellibrand River, a few torpedo punts from the Princetown beach. It is exceptionally dark, and one of the few visible lights comes from the headlights of the family car just metres away.
Inside the car sits Cunnington's ever-patient mother, Cheryl, who sits and waits while the eldest of her four children does his recovery session in the frigid water.
It is a scene that has been played over many times for Cunnington, who has been described by Geelong Falcons regional manager Michael Turner as "the most professional kid" he has seen in 15 years of TAC Cup involvement.
"I've seen a lot of great kids come through our system such as Jonathan Brown, Luke Hodge, Gary Ablett and Jimmy Bartel," Turner said.
"But Ben Cunnington is the most professional kid I have been associated with in my 15 years in the TAC Cup."
This cold August night, though, emphasises the youngster's zeal to be the best he can, and to live out an AFL dream that is almost as old as he is.
He had played with the Geelong Falcons on the Gold Coast, flown to Melbourne with the team before arriving in Geelong about 10.30pm.
Picked up by his family, he would not arrive at the dairy farm in Princetown he calls home - almost 160km from Geelong - until almost 1am.
Most would have been excused for pulling the doona up on the cold night. But Cunnington, 18, is not your average footballer.
He knew he had to soothe his aching muscles. Going immediately to bed - regardless of the time - never entered his head.
"Recovery is such a massive thing these days," he said. "The way that I play, going in hard and stuff, you tend to pull up pretty sore.
"I have to get into the water or else I will pull up too sore.
"It's only five minutes down the road to the beach. I have always believed in trying to prepare yourself as best as you can.
"Mum used to drive me down just to keep an eye on me, in case I fell over or something."

BEN Cunnington and Gary Rohan have always had a connection. Born 23 days apart (with Rohan the elder), the close mates are sons of farmers, went to each other's birthday parties, and shared classes at the school in Timboon - nestled between Cobden and Port Campbell in the Western District.
They even played a few games together with Cobden in the thirds before reuniting with the Geelong Falcons this year, as well as the Vic Country side and selection in the All-Australian under-18 team.
But in 18 days the link that has carried them through most of their 18 years will be broken.
The two well-spoken, gregarious and fun-loving teenagers - united by geography and their love of football - are certain to be among the top 10 draftees in the country.
That's a big effort for young footballers who have had to spend more time travelling to and from training and games in a month than most footballers do in a season.
The chances are these two from the Cobden Football Club - where league luminaries such as Thorold Merrett, Alistair Lord and John Rantall once played - are in line for North Melbourne's No. 5 slot when the national draft takes place on November 26.
Whoever misses out could be headed interstate with Sydney next, followed by West Coast 7 and Port Adelaide 8 and 9.
It is almost a given neither will still be around when the picks get into double figures.
"It's really exciting, the draft is coming up, and that's what we have both been working towards for the past year," Cunnington said from his parents' 144ha dairy farm at Princetown.
In many ways, he has been preparing for it for most of his life.
His mother, Cheryl, and father Al recall the time he was the only kid in prep not wanting to be a fireman after the fire truck had been for a visit. He told his teacher he wanted to play AFL football.
His brothers, Sam and Jack, and sister, Maddie, joke that he even sleeps with a football.
Farm life means he has to help, but milking cows (which he does most nights) is a distant second to chasing a Sherrin.
Rohan loves his football, too, but his pathway has been in stark contrast to Cunnington's trek through the representative under-age teams.
For a time, when he was about 14, Rohan failed to make the Cobden side. As a result, he gave up the game and played netball.
He won the best and fairest (he was the only male in the team), but it only served to rekindle his passion for football.
Rohan did not make the Geelong Falcons final squad last year, instead playing with Cobden firsts - where Cunnington kicked 10 goals in his first senior game (Rohan was cheering behind the goals that day).
Rohan credits playing against men for his superb season in the TAC Cup this year.
"Yeah, it's been like a dream for me, really," Rohan said. "At the start of the year, I didn't even know if I would playing with the Falcons, let alone be in this position."
His father, Jim, played St Kilda reserves in 1985 and '86.
Rohan is an exceptional athlete, winning the state school high jump for his age bracket last month, and also finishing a narrow second in the 200m.
Both are managed by Nick Gieschen, from Elite Sports Properties, who has a close relationship with the families.
"I've known Benny for about 12 months, and Gary for about six or seven," Gieschen said. "It's been great to know them, as they both come from great families."
The families are close, because they have often had to take it in turns driving their sons to training in Geelong.
Cunnington and Rohan know they are destined to leave their idyllic region, but they won't be lost to it.
"It's pretty good to have two boys from the same club getting a chance," Rohan said. "You always remember where you come from."
Cunnington agreed: "There's no doubt about that. That's where the journey started, and you never forget that." http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,26320730-5016169,00.html

What type of player are you?
A tall key forward who provides a good option on the lead and good below the knees.

FROM: The Dandenong Stingrays, and Haileybury College, via the Narre Warren juniors. Scully made the under-18 All-Australian sides in 2008 and 2009 and was part of the 2008 AIS-AFL Academy, where he was mentored by Nathan Buckley.
THE NUMBERS: Born May 15, 1991. 182 centimetres, 77 kilograms.
THE LOWDOWN: Scully has been compared to Chris Judd but in reality he's the Ben Cousins of this year's draft pool. When the others have all stopped there he'll be, still running. He has great anticipation, which means he gets his hands on the ball first more often than not, and his vision and lightning-quick hands set teammates into space. He can prise the ball through small spaces and he uses smartly when he gets it on the outside too. Has a bit of steel about him, and has been touted as a potential captain.
RUNNING AND JUMPING: Scully injured his knee on preliminary final weekend, and couldn't test at draft camp. His speed before leaving on a South African tour in March 2008 was 3.08 seconds over 20 metres, and he is an endurance machine: he's been mid to high in level 15 since every time tested. During one of his AIS tests he was actually stopped at around level 15.6, having run almost an entire level more than the next player, Steele Sidebottom.
WHO WANTS HIM? Any club would happily slip him into its midfield, but won't get the chance: he'll go to Melbourne as the No. 1 pick.
IRRELEVANT YET INTERESTING FACT: Scully played under-12 state football with North Melbourne's Jack Ziebell, and their fathers have been great friends ever since.
WHO WOULD PLAY HIM IN A MOVIE? Daniel Craig, in James Bond mode. Ice-cool customer, always in the action, quick with his hands.

HIS nickname is the "Lajamanu Lightning Bolt", and some Darwin football judges rate him a more exciting prospect than his Walpiri cousin, Demons sensation Liam Jurrah.

Liam Patrick, 21, has been courted by at least four AFL clubs in the lead-up to this month's draft.
He is from the community of Lajumanu, 900km south of Darwin, towards the Western Australia border, and used to drive every week to play in the Northern Territory Football League with the Wanderers Football Club.
With an eye to being drafted, however, he moved to Darwin to enhance his prospects.
Hawthorn and Melbourne are believed to be interested in the 185cm goalkicking utility, while the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne are said to have been monitoring his form.
Patrick has flown under the radar until now largely because he was more focused on his young family: wife Loretta and five-month-old son Mazlin.
Jurrah, his cousin, became a smash hit with Melbourne last season after the Demons gambled on the Territorian as a rookie draft selection. http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/afl/story/0,27046,26329153-5016169,00.html

Personally, I think there is no chance we will get him. Firstly Port Adelaide and Melbourne probs won't go for him due to their youth policy. Though Essendon are shoe-ins to get him after delisting Adam McPhee they will have extra funds and have two picks just before us. Personally I think we need a good midfielder with 27. E.g Allen Christensen and I personally rate Jesse Chrichton and Jordan Gysberts. With 47 we should get a small forward and pass on 76 then we can have a pick in the pre-season and get an already established player.

Great write-up draft...and agreed that we should get Bastinac, he's already an established hard-running midfielder...or Allen Christensen. ;)
Oh yeah, forgot Pick 4, whoever gets the pick after Essendon should get Myles Sewell.

Also, I like Shirley at Pick 84, especially since he has hinted that he wants to play in a team that has a genuine Premiership chance. Great tagger and has been tagged by Judd and Ablett as the 'hardest player they have ever played on'. Shirley can go teach Stiller and Selwood some tricks, too. ;)

Bastanic will be gone by our pick! Kangas will take him at pick 21 or pick 25! Has everyone seen the vid of Callum Bartlett. We must draft this kid!

I think the Lions should take a look at these guys. BTW Callum Bartlett has had chronic knee injuries it would be like drafting Max Bailey.

I think we should have a look at drafting Robbo, he's still can kick a bag and play lead-up forward from the pocket. Boosts our small forward stocks, also. Obviously, he's a short-term replacement and solution but if we want this Premiership before Black, Brown, Power, etc. retire, then we'll have to start drafting blokes that can make an immediate impact. This is why we should get Robbo, quick smart. ;)
And I don't like the idea of drafting Cam Cloke, that guy is an absolute hack, can't crack a game at Carlton.

What type of player are you?

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?

What parts of your game would you like to improve?

Essendon / Collingwood. I came around barracking for Essendon because I was a big fan of James Hird and for Collingwood because I just love the way they play - it's so exciting to watch. I reckon the Bombers are playing like that now too so it's good.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
Mum and Dad. Mum because she has brought me up and did so much for me and was supportive so it's great to be giving her back what she has put into me. Dad because I have heard he had so much talent and just got caught up in the wrong crowd so I want to show him I can make it the whole way.

Yeah, Duncan is a good prospect, but I doubt he'll slip to us @ 27, tho. Christensen is the realistic option if we don't snap up a mature-age recruit (i.e Ball, Smith, etc.). He's small and Kerr-like and won't be negated with an easy tag! :D

Melbourne Demons forward Jack Watts was top of the class in 2008. Before this year's AFL national draft, talent manager Kevin Sheehan casts an eye across this year's crop.

Fox Sports will televise the 2009 national draft LIVE and EXCLUSIVE from 6.30pm on November 26.

Ryan Bastinac
From: Dandenong Stingrays/Rowville FC
Key numbers: 183cm, 74kg, 22/06/91
Ryan is a smart inside midfielder with terrific contested ball winning ability. He works hard and brings others into the game with excellent vision, awareness and clean hands in traffic. Ryan possesses elite endurance and his 15.1 beep test result at the 2009 AFL draft camp in Canberra places him in the top five among current AFL players to have tested at the camp; equal with Chris Judd. After finishing third in the Dandenong Stingrays best and fairest in 2008, Ryan co-captained the side with Tom Scully in 2009. He averaged 22 disposals, four tackles and a goal in his 15 matches.

Ryan says: "I really love watching Simon Black and Scott Pendlebury play. Their decision making and ball use is really good."

Aaron Black
From: Peel Thunder/ Kingsley JFC
Key numbers: 193cm, 78kg, 29/11/90
An athletic tall with a basketball background who has emerged as one of the top key position prospects for the year. Aaron possesses outstanding marking ability, athleticism and awareness on the field. He began the 2009 season with the Peel Thunder Colts where played predominately as a forward. His 16 matches yielded 33 goals including consecutive bags of six in rounds 13 and 14. His round 14 match against Subiaco was among his best for the season with 29 possessions, 14 marks and six goals, four behinds.

Aaron says: "I think I'm pretty versatile. I play centre half forward, full forward and in a couple of my league games I played on the wing and even moved into the ruck. Being versatile I'm a bit like Paddy Ryder or Jarred Brennan. They're both versatile players with a good vertical leap and I love the way they move around the ground and play an exciting brand of footy."

John Butcher
From: Gippsland Power/Maffra
Key numbers: 197cm, 84kgs, 03/07/91
John is versatile key position prospect with great agility, pace and endurance for his size.
He has clean hands in the air and below his knees, is extremely quick off the mark and is rarely beaten in a one-on-one contest. He possesses all the characteristic of a key forward, attacking the contest hard and keeping his feet. John followed his successful 35-goal year with Gippsland Power in 2008, with a haul of 32 from his 11 matches in 2009. His best came against the Gold Coast in round six at Carrara where he bagged six goals and took eight marks. Despite playing just the 11 matches, he ranked equal seventh overall in the TAC Cup for contested marks.

John says: "I'm a massive Saints fan and (I) obviously (model my game on) Nick Riewoldt for his leadership and work rate to get to every contest. (My key strengths are) definitely my marking, agility, pace and my one-touch work at ground level."

Jake Carlisle
From: Calder Cannons/Craigieburn FC
Key numbers: 196cm, 83kg, 01/10/91
Jake is an emerging key position player, still developing after making the switch from elite junior cricket at the start of the year. He is very promising and with excellent endurance, has shown the ability to play at either end of the ground. Jake has strong hands, excellent foot skills and reads the play exceptionally well. He attacks the contest hard and is very dangerous on the lead. A key player in the Vic Metro forward line at the 2009 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, Jake ranked in the top-three for Vic Metro for both contested marks and goals kicked with a total of seven straight in his four matches.
Jake was part of the Calder Cannons premiership winning team, booting 19 goals for the season.

Jake says: "When I play forward I probably model myself on Nick Riewoldt. His work rate is unbelievable and he is an excellent leader. When I play centre half back I'm a bit like Brian Lake as I try to out-mark my opponents like him."

Jessie Crichton
From: Tassie Mariners/North Launceston FC
Key numbers: 183cm, 66kg, 18/06/91
Jesse is a creative playmaker who has instinctive ability to find space in traffic. He has exceptional vision and awareness and wins his own football in the air and at ground level. He is a competitor and his laid back and friendly attitude is in stark contrast to his intensity and ferocity on the field. A team player, Jesse's creative handball brings his teammates into the game. His creativity and ability to find space from the heaviest of traffic makes him a valuable player in any part of the ground. He averaged 20 disposals per match and impressed in Tasmania's big win over Queensland gathering 28 possessions, five marks, 10 tackles and six inside-50s.

Jessie says: "I like the way Lenny Hayes goes about his football. He is hard and tough and good tackler. I think I'm pretty versatile and able to play in a number of roles; on the ball, on the wing or as half forward/half back."

Ben Cunnington
From: Geelong Falcons / Cobden FC
Key numbers: 186cm, 84kg, 30/06/91
Ben is a tough, skilful and versatile inside midfielder who rarely losses a contest. With rare making ability overhead for a player his size, Ben has the ability to become a dangerous target across half forward, while his strength in a contest and quality decision making means he can also play a role in defence. He demonstrates an impressive ability to win equal amounts of contested and uncontested possessions and his strength, balance and evasive skills mean he is rarely bought to ground in a tackle. Ben has been one of the form underage footballers of the year impressing at both national level at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and in TAC Cup. He was a standout for Vic Country throughout the Under 18 Championships and earned All Australian honours after averaging 20 possessions and five tackles per match. Captain of the Geelong Falcons in 2009, he grew into the role and lead his team with distinction.

Ben says: "My competiveness and attack on the footy (are my strengths) - I hate losing a contest in the air or on the ground. My defensive skills and one-percenters. I've modelled my game on Luke Hodge for a few years now. Just for the way he goes about it, he's attack on the footy and his courage."

Mitchell Duncan
From: East Perth/Trinity College
Key numbers: 188cm, 81kg, 10/6/91
Mitchell is a strong lead-up forward who presents well and has excellent hands overhead. His foot skills and ability to read the game to advantage give him the ability to play a variety of roles including on-ball. He makes excellent decisions and is capable on both sides of the body. An AIS-AFL Academy graduate, Mitch is an emerging leader and is extremely professional in his approach to the game. He was an integral part of Western Australia's title-winning team at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and earned All-Australian honours. He averaged 20 disposals per match at 75 per cent efficiency. He ranked equal third overall for Western Australia for marks and booted eight goals.

Mitchell says: "I model myself on Andrew Embley from the Eagles for his ability to play a variety of positions from half back to half forward and his natural running ability and his finishing skills."

Max Gawn
From: Sandringham Dragons/Ormond FC
Key numbers: 207cm, 104kg, 30/12/1991
Max is a giant and at 207cm he would rank as the second tallest player in the AFL behind Aaron Sandilands. Max's marking is a feature of his game and he is excellent one-one-one, making him dangerous when used as forward option. He is a strong competitor and has worked on developing his second efforts and tackling. Max has spent only minimal time in the talented player pathway. As such, he will require some development before stepping up to AFL level but he has shown in glimpses the potential to be a very exciting player. His season with the Sandringham Dragons was curtailed after just four matches when he suffered a rupture to his ACL. The injury came just before Max was to represent Vic Metro at the 2009 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships.

Max says: "Brad Ottens – he is how I want to play. It's a lot about his ruckwork and that his more of a ruckman that can go forward rather than a forward that plays ruck and that's what I base my game on."

Benjamin Griffiths
From: Eastern Ranges/Blackburn FC
Key numbers: 198cm, 99kg, 17/09/91
Benjamin is a very promising key position prospect who can take a strong contested mark. He moves quickly for player his size and is adept when the ball is at ground level. Shapes ideally as key forward as he possesses a thumping long kick and is very accurate in front of goal. His development has been cruelled by injuries but he shows great ability when his body is right. Benjamin represented Vic Metro at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and showed glimpses of his best form when booting five goals against NSW/ACT. He played 10 matches with the Eastern Ranges in 2009, playing his best football in the second half of the season. He followed up a bag of six goals against the Calder Cannons in round 17 with an impressive performance in the first qualifying final against Geelong where he claimed 10 marks and booted four goals.

Benjamin says: "I think I have a very similar body shape to Tom Hawkins. I play very similar to the way he plays as hit up forward with a big body and a solid kick for goal. "

Dylan Grimes
From: Northern Knights/Hurstbridge FC
Key numbers: 192cm, 81kg, 16/07/91
Dylan is a quick, tall defender renowned for his competitiveness. The brother of Melbourne's 2009 AFL Rising Star nominee Jack, Dylan reads the play well and has good ability to win the ball around stoppages. He is very professional and committed in his approach to football and shapes as a potential leader. He represented Vic Metro at 2009 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, playing two matches and demonstrating his good defensive skills and impressive closing speed on opponents. Dylan played 16 matches for the Northern Knights in 2009, mainly in a key defensive post. He averaged 14 possessions and was impressive in the Knights round 18 win over North Ballarat, collecting 18 possessions and nine tackles.

Dylan says: "My older brother Jack, he has succeeded in want I want to achieve two years ahead of me. I model myself on how he went about his footy. His commitment and work ethic was really first rate and I aim to replicate that. Players like Joel Selwood and Jason Porplyzia who are renowned for their hardness at the ball and their work rate. They're players that are prepared to do more off the ball than when they have the ball."

Jordan Gysberts
From: Eastern Ranges/Yarra Valley Grammar
Key numbers: 188cm, 83kgs, 11/06/91
Jordan is very much a quiet achiever but fiercely competitive on the field. An AIS-AFL Academy graduate, he is a smart midfielder who wins plenty of his own ball, be it contested or uncontested. Jordan is a one-touch player and has a great ability to bring teammates into the game and set up scoring opportunities with his quick ball movement by hand. He has good skills both sides of the body and is a nice finisher when he pushes forward. Jordan represented Vic Metro in four matches at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and averaged 16 possessions at 77 per cent efficiency. He proved dangerous around goal with five for the carnival including two against Western Australia at Subiaco.

Jordan says: "I'm a big fan of Scott Pendlebury, I think we play a similar style. We both have a basketball background, we're a similar height, play inside and outside and are good around the stoppages."

Lewis Jetta
From: Swan Districts/Bridgetown FC
Key numbers: 178cm, 72kg, 04/05/89
Lewis is an extremely quick player who uses his pace to run and carry the ball. He has the ability to play in a variety of roles and is equally dangerous as a rebounding defender or half forward. He has outstanding skills and his marking for player his size is excellent.
Lewis possesses excellent agility and a long, penetrating kick. He played all 22 league matches with Swan Districts in 2009, averaging 15 disposals. He was part of Swans first semi-final team against West Perth and performed with distinction alongside several AFL listed players including Ashley Hansen, Tony Notte, Nicholas Naitanui and Clancee Pearce. He gathered 26 disposals, 10 marks and booted three goals, helping Swans to a comfortable win. Lewis was among the fastest players tested at the 2009 AFL draft camp, posting a time of 2.95 seconds for the 20-metre sprint and ranking in the top 15 per cent for the repeat sprint testing.

Lewis says: "(I model my game on) Andrew Lovett for the way he runs, carries the ball and burns people off. I love to bounce the ball. I think I have the most bounces in the WAFL this year. I thought I wasn't hard enough so I went back down to the country last year just to harden up – get bumped and tackled. I felt I wasn't ready in 2007 so I came back up this year, thought I was ready and gave it crack."

Kane Lucas
From: East Fremantle/Trinity College
Key numbers: 188cm, 79kg, 26/06/91
Kane is a hard running and highly skilled ball winner, capable of winning both contested and uncontested possessions. His speed and ability to read the play are both among his key strengths and he impresses with his ability to run and carry the ball. He represented Western Australia at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and was pivotal as one of the team's key leading forwards. He averaged 21 disposals per game (75 per cent efficiency), booted six goals and was also credited with 10 score assists. His outstanding carnival earned him All-Australian selection. Kane showed a remarkable mix of speed, agility and endurance at the 2009 AFL draft camp, clocking the fastest time for the agility test (7.95) and ranking in the top echelon of players for the 20-metre sprint (2.93 seconds), beep test (14.4) and three-kilometre time trial.

Kane says: "I like to see myself as a midfielder, so I like to watch the elite midfielders like Judd, Murphy and Pendelbury."

Dustin Martin
From: Bendigo Pioneers/Castlemaine FC
Key numbers: 187cm, 86kg, 26/06/91
Dustin is attacking midfielder with outstanding ball winning ability. He possesses exceptional balance and rarely goes to ground in a contest. With excellent pace and a penetrating right foot kick, he is a particularly dangerous player around goal. Dustin was one of the standouts for Vic Country at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and earned All-Australian honours. He averaged 21 possessions per game and led his team for clearances and inside-50s. In his final three matches of the year he averaged 32 possessions, five marks and 16 handball receives. Dustin attended the 2009 AFL draft camp and was one of the most impressive players tested ranking second overall for the 20-metre sprint (2.89seconds) and the inaugural Buckley kicking test, as well as posting a 14.1 beep test.

Dustin says: "I think i'm strong around the contest, I can break tackles, I make good decisions and have good skills. (I've got) probably a little bit of Lenny Hayes or a bit of Joel Selwood. Lenny Hayes is such a good clearance player, he can get the hard ball and break lines. Selwood is pretty similar, he can give it off and get it back, setting up forward attacks."

Jasper McMillan-Pittard
From: Geelong Falcons/Torquay FC
Key numbers: 185cm, 70kg, 01/01/91
Jasper's athleticism makes him exceptionally versatile, though he shapes as dangerous rebounding defender. He has played the majority of his football in 2009 on the wing and across the half back line. His ability to read the game has seen him zone off his opponents to great effect and his resulting forward thrusts can be particularly damaging given his excellent skills by foot. In defensive roles his great athleticism enables him to play on much taller opponents, while his good speed means he is also suited to standing smaller forwards. Jasper represented Vic Country at the 2009 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and ranked third for his team overall for rebound 50s. While unable to test, he certainly impressed prospective clubs in Canberra, with Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos quipping after interviewing Jasper that he would consider him for an assistant coaching role.

Jasper says: "I go for St Kilda and I like the way Sam Gilbert plays as he is an attacking backman and I like to see myself as one who sets up from the backline. I really like his intent on the ball and tackling. There are a lot of running players in the AFL like Andrew Mackie who set up and use that run and carry who I'd like to be like. When I've got the ball, just being able to carry it as far as possible and hold it and be able to sum up the best option going into the forward line."

Jake Melksham

He represented Vic Metro at the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships, averaging 18 possessions per match and ranking second overall for Vic Metro for score assists and for clearances (behind only Tom Scully). He gathered 17 kicks, seven handballs, four tackles and six marks to take out the TAC medal for best on ground in the grand final.

Jake says: "(I model my game on) Lenny Hayes. He's a hard worker, never gives in and is always giving 100 percent. He wins the inside ball and has good skills as well. I make good decisions, I think I've got good movement and agility and I like to go for my marks."

Daniel Menzel

Andrew demonstrated good athletic ability at the 2009 AFL draft camp, ranking first overall for the running vertical leap test. His sub three-second 20-metre sprint time (2.97 seconds) and 14.1 beep test also demonstrated a desirable mix of explosive speed and endurance.

Andrew says: "I've been modelling myself on two players – Ryan O'Keefe and Adam Goodes. Ryan O'Keefe because he's a versatile player similar to me, his height is similar to mine and he has a great work ethic. Adam Goodes for his athleticism. I'm able to play in a variety of positions and roles on the field whether it be forward, down back or even in the midfield. Another (strength) would be my athleticism. I played a fair bit of basketball in my junior years and that has helped me develop my agility."

Anthony Morabito
From: Peel Thunder/Harvey Brunswick JFC
Key numbers: 190cm, 90kg, 29/10/91

His pace makes him extremely dangerous in all parts of the ground while he uses his exceptional agility to break free from contested situations and find space to run and carry. Anthony impressed in 10 senior matches with Peel Thunder in 2009 where was used in a variety of roles.

Anthony says: "There's probably not one (player I model my game on)– but I guess the likes of Matthew Pavlich, being the same size as him and seeing him play in the midfield gives me a lot of confidence. Players like Brett Deledio too who run and carry the ball."

He kicked a bag of five goals against NSW/ACT and was among South Australia's best in their win over Vic Country at AAMI Stadium, booting four goals. Matthew attended the AFL Draft Camp in Canberra, demonstrating good agility with an above average result of 8.37 for the agility test.

Matthew says: "I'm trying to model my game on Nick Riewoldt because he works really hard and that's an area I need to improve so hopefully I can model myself on him and keep my work rate up during games."

Gary Rohan
From: Geelong Falcons/Cobden
Key numbers: 186cm, 79kg, 07/06/91
Gary is an explosive half forward and one of the true surprise packets of the season, emerging from senior football with Cobden in 2008 to the point where is a likely first-round draft selection in 2009. Tom says: "It's been tough at times but I think all that pressure is external and there's not much I can do about it. I've just worried about things I can control which is playing football, my preparation and giving myself the best opportunity to play well. I try to play a bit like Joel Selwood, he's obviously one of the most courageous players going around and I really admire his work."

Whatever...heres another one...lol. :D
WILL it be Scully or Trengove?

Where will former St Kilda skipper Luke Ball end up?

If you want the inside word on who will be taken No.1 in Thursday night's NAB AFL Draft, or which club will call out Ball's number, then there's only one place to go.

On Wednesday morning at 10am AEDT, Matt Burgan's Phantom Draft will be available on afl.com.au.

It's the original Phantom Draft and still the best.

Why? Because Burgan has spoken to recruiters from across the AFL, covered the draft camp, underage competitions and state leagues, and canvassed the opinions of the best talent scouts and player managers in footy to develop the most in-depth draft knowledge in the country.

On Wednesday, that knowledge will be shared with afl.com.au's readers when Burgan looks into the draft crystal ball and goes through every single pick from every single round.

And after you have had time to digest the order in its entirety, come back to afl.com.au at noon when you'll have the chance to chat with Burgan about his selections and the reasoning behind them.

There may be imitators, but only afl.com.au's Phantom Draft gives you the clearest possible picture of how the day will pan out.

The draft is televised on Fox Sports - Thursday 26th November at 5:30 I don't know if that is the live draft or a summary of the draft!

BTW I didn't have a problem with that dude putting up player profiles but I said why put up unrealistic ones like Kane Lucas who are NEVER going to get through to pick 27. I thought it would be a good idea for him to find out info on A.Christensen, J,Chrichton. J.Gysberts. A.Hooper, T.Taylor. ETC.

WAS THAT TOO RUDE????

A possible Pre-Season Draft to go along with my Phantom Draft

Mock Preseason Draft

1 Melbourne - Joel Macdonald

2 Fremantle - Adam McPhee

3 Sydney - Daniel Bradshaw

4 Carlton - Matt Maguire

5 Brisbane - Chris Bryan - The ex-Carlton man was the best ruckmen in the comp on his day though form issues pushed him out. A constant goal-kicker a possible third tall up forward or Back-up Ruckman.

6 Collingwood - Jamie McNamara

7 Western Bulldogs - Rhan Hooper - Recently expressed interest in him and require someone at the feet of Barry (Hall) to go along with their small mids.

8 St Kilda - Robert Shirley

BrisLions
21-11-2009, 08:37 PM
I think the first four are sorted but after that it's pretty tricky. I have allocated players depending on clubs needs. E.G Chris Bryan should go to BRISBANE because they could use an extra tall and they have fragile ruckmen. It also depends if we get Luke Ball if we do then we will pick a kid because we simply don't the money availabe.

christicehurst
21-11-2009, 08:39 PM
Bryan might be a good pick, what other players would we look at?

BrisLions
21-11-2009, 09:01 PM
Of cours we will look at Luke Ball if he manages to make it through.

We will also look at Robert Shirley (AFL'S Best Tagger IMO), Cameron Cloke - Carlton, Good Ruckmen - Chimes in with goals. E.G Carlton V Brisbane he got 2

Also Matt McGuire if he comes through. Also Dan O'Keefe former first round pick fit as - and Matt Riggio - Could be that missing small forward.

Also to be a little crazy we could look at Robbo as an option for a year or two and possibly Daniel Harris. Otherwise we could take a gun kid who's a bit wacky (Jared Brennan Style) E.G Liam Patrick or Majak Daw. Liam Patrick is Liam Jurrah's cousin and drafters say he is better than him.

As for Majak Daw, big, islander, did I say big??? na jks. But seriously massive guy but new to the game. Similar to Natanui but bigger. Also he follows on his ruckwork similar to Dean Cox or Mitch Clark.

HAVING compiled this list three times now, lessons have been learnt. First, you can watch a player too much. Second, every player has fl aws and it's easy to become hung up on one perceived problem area.
Stephen Hill and Daniel Rich were probably ranked too low on my 2008 list, although there's no one rated above them that I'd be looking to move, but Michael Hurley at 13? Ouch. I was a big fan this time last year, loved his long kicking and ability to read the play, but wondered if he had enough pace off the mark to keep up with fast-leading forwards. Hurley doesn't have great pace, but it hasn't yet been exposed - maybe it will be in time, perhaps it won't. Regardless, his many other abilities combined to make his first season a very good one and I learnt not to overthink things. Hurley aside, I think my 2008 list looks OK.
This is a difficult exercise because you constantly look through the list and realise you have a player too far down the order. You think, ‘No, that's not right', move them, then go through the exact same process with another.
Apologies this year to South Australian pair Matthew Panos and James Craig, West Australians Mitch Duncan, Gerrick Weedon and Travis Colyer, as well as midfielders Josh Thomas, Allen Christensen and Anthony Long, and Geelong defender Joe Dare. And to Luke Ball, who I decided not to include given the purpose of this exercise is largely to introduce the young players. Remember, these are my personal thoughts on this year's group, not a mock draft or a list of where I think players will be picked. It's based on watching the players live, trawling through tapes and talking to them and the people who know them well. Let's wait three years and see how it looks.

1. JACK TRENGOVE (18, Sturt, 185cm, 84kg) I have no idea how the Demons would have split Trengove and Scully had Jordan McMahon not delivered them a priority pick with his postsiren goal for a four-point Richmond win in round 18. I've spent the past week changing my mind repeatedly, but in the end I believe Trengove has it all: he's quick enough, his endurance is top notch and, more importantly, he is already a smart runner, who knows exactly where he needs to be. Watching his under-18 games with South Australia, you'd sometimes think, ‘Who laid that block? Who trapped that ball?' More often than not, it would have been him. He stays involved in the play and has a great feel for what's going on. He's at No. 1 mostly on gut feel and also because he's such a good mark. He could go forward in the last quarter, take a few marks out of the square and kick a few crunch goals.

2. TOM SCULLY (18, Dandenong Stingrays, 182cm, 77kg) Scully runs harder, for longer and with more purpose than any other player in the draft. He already plays like an AFL player. He has quick, brilliant hands, he makes good decisions and he makes them the instant his hands touch the ball, which makes him so good in close. He makes his teammates better players because he puts them in ideal situations. He'll grind opponents out of games, yet his pace looks fine, as does his kicking. He is a megaprofessional, a perfectionist. He'll get the absolute most out of himself from day one of training and has a nice bit of steel to his personality.

3. DUSTIN MARTIN (18, Bendigo Pioneers, 186cm, 88kg) Meet Martin and you feel you're talking to someone in his 30s. He's an adult – likeable, but hard-nosed and very strong-minded, which comes through in his footy. He keeps his feet and stays upright - with his eyes up - when tackled, allowing him to squeeze the ball out to sensible spots while being grabbed. He'll just have to figure out how much time he's got to get rid of it at the higher level, and do his share of the tackling. In space, he's a beautiful kick on both sides and able to slip forward and take a mark. Martin has only had one year in the TAC Cup system, has plenty of scope and will love being a full-time footballer.

4. GARY ROHAN (18, Geelong Falcons, 188cm, 82kg) Watching Rohan play, you sometimes feel you want to cover your eyes. He'll hurl himself into a mark, turn, take off and you have no clue what's going to happen next. He's the most exhilarating player in the pool. He does many things at once and while he makes some errors, he can disrupt the rhythm of a game. He doesn't win huge possessions, but he has the ability to stress out other players by chasing them, causing turnovers. He's coming from a long way back - he played for Cobden last year and trained only one night a week with the Falcons this year - but you get the sense he'll fl ourish once he gets into an AFL club and starts to understand how good he could be.

5. JOHN BUTCHER (18, Gippsland Power, 197cm, 87kg) Butcher takes pack marks, is a speedy lead and draws multiple opponents. He had hip surgery last December and didn't get in a huge pre-season, which surely affected him in his second year in the under-18s. His kicking action needs work, but this is as far as I want to let him drop. He'll start work on his kick every single day once he gets to his new club and while he missed a lot of shots this year, he also had about 70 of them. If he doesn't mark the ball, his opponent generally doesn't either, and natural forwards who take contested marks don't come around often.

6. JAKE MELKSHAM (18, Calder Cannons, 185cm, 75kg) After a slow start to the season, Melksham fl ew home. He's quick enough, once he gets wound up, and always on the move. He can reach in and wrench the ball out of tight spots, keep it moving as he slides through packs and uses it well when it's fed his way. Some of his kicking is weighted so well that it makes life a lot easier for his forwards. He can also throw in a nice, well-timed mark or two, getting good height off a minimal run-up.

7. BEN CUNNINGTON (18, Geelong Falcons, 185cm, 84kg) Supporters will adore Cunnington as soon as they see him. He's tough, will do anything for his team and while he perhaps doesn't have the polish of some of the other midfielders, his skills are fine and his determination to a) not let anyone beat him to the ball and b) tackle, chase, smother and shepherd add another layer to his CV. His marking is another big plus. He reads the play well as a forward and is a strong overhead mark, even when opponents are right on his hammer - in fact, especially when opponents are on his hammer. Dedicated, determined and a safe bet.

8. JASPER McMILLAN-PITTARD (18, Geelong Falcons, 186cm, 71kg) At first glance, Jasper looks like a scrawny half-back fl anker. He is a scrawny half-back fl anker. But the way I see it, he has every ability required to play AFL footy, minus seven or eight kilograms. He's a smooth, smart, switched-on player who can get up onto the wings and deliver nice left-foot passes. Some added size will make his spoiling ability even more valuable, and Jasper thinks a split-second faster than those around him. It's like he instinctively knows where everyone is, what they're doing and what they're most likely to do next, allowing him to find ways past and around them. He's a favourite.

9. ANTHONY MORABITO (18, Peel Thunder, 191cm, 97kg) Big, fast, powerful and able to leap buildings in a single bound. Morabito plays like he's wearing jet-powered boots, such is his pace and ability to change gear. Like Rohan, he's exciting to watch when he snatches the ball and bolts off with it. Again, he can make mistakes and try to do too much, but at his height and with his speed, playing on a wing, he could prove very tricky to match up. I hope I don't have him too low.

10. CALLUM BARTLETT (18, Geelong Falcons, 179cm, 75kg) Bartlett hasn't played this season due to a knee reconstruction after tearing an ACL at training ahead of round one. It's tough to say where he'll get drafted – he could go anywhere between 17 and 30, perhaps – but his rehab has gone well and he will be well worth the risk. He is incredibly quick and a bold, catch-me-if-youcan type runner. He knows exactly where he wants to go. There are a lot of unobtrusive midfield types in this draft, but he's not one of them.

11. LEWIS JETTA (20, Swan Districts, 181cm, 69kg) Jetta is vibrant, skilful and quick, quick, quick. Don't think of him as a small forward - he may start there, but he's an Andrew Lovett-style midfi elder who fl ashes past fl ailing arms as he zooms, bouncing, down the ground. He knows where he needs to be to cause damage, and can do some freaky things.

12. AARON BLACK (18, Peel Thunder, 192cm, 82kg) Black is a late-ish bloomer, finding form through the middle of the year after missing the WA under-18 championship team and making his senior WAFL debut by the end of the season. While I would have liked to have seen more of him, I've seen enough to feel confident placing him here. He can haul in marks when he seems in an awkward position and is a lightfooted, nimble player who can take off for a run, pluck loose balls off the ground and cover plenty of ground.

13. DANIEL TALIA (18, Calder Cannons, 194kg, 90kg) Talia looks like he could legitimately play at either end. As a key back, he has a calm, assured air about him, yet at the same time has plenty of energy and bounce. He takes a crisp mark yet stays involved when the ball is on the ground. He reads it off hands well, which makes him handy around bounces and throw-ins. His season ended early due to hamstring tendonitis, but he's ready now to train again.

14. ANDREW MOORE (18, Eastern Ranges, 189cm, 86kg) Where will Moore end up playing - that's my question? Half-forward or half-back look the go, or perhaps the midfield. Whatever the case, he is one of the smartest in this draft. He generally takes the best option and can adapt to changing roles on the run. He's tough, skilful and and his marking is so clean. You can almost hear the ball clunking into his hands from the stands.

15. TROY TAYLOR (18, NT Thunder, 189cm, 77kg) Taylor has some special talent. He's quick, can scoop up ground balls swiftly and make good decisions while doing so. He's got the sidestep and the leap, he can outmark players he looks too short to outmark and he has an absolute eye for the impossible goal. He's good fun to watch. After getting into some serious trouble as a kid in Darwin, he has things together and has a great opportunity ahead of him. Once he starts to understand what he could achieve, he could be anything.

16. BRAD SHEPPARD (18, East Fremantle, 186cm, 81kg) Will Sheppard be a half-back fl anker at AFL level, or push into the midfi eld? That's probably the biggest question about him. He is a neat, sleek, smart player who can get things going while in space, yet at the same time relishes the chance to back back and spoil. His teammates seem confident in him - throughout the national under-18s championships they often looked for him as they pushed into attack from half-back.

17. RYAN BASTINAC (18, Dandenong Stingrays, 184cm, 77kg) Bastinac is one of the best kicks in the draft and another good-at-everything type. He wins plenty of the ball in close and that, combined with his vision, foot skills and willingness to tackle makes him a solid midfield prospect. He'll run, run and run, he's a willing tackler and a sensible player who thinks things through.

18. KANE LUCAS (18, East Fremantle, 187cm, 79kg) Lucas, like a few onballers in this draft, doesn't have one clear, eye-catching quality that forces you to notice him. He's simply a solid player - if an inconsistent kick - with good pace, great endurance, a good leap, and pretty good hands. He has great balance and can slip and slide through busy packs, spin off players and involve himself two or three times in a single piece of play. A great attitude, from all reports.

19. KOBY STEVENS (18, Gippsland Power, 187cm, 84kg) Stevens is a ferocious midfielder who will give you everything he has. He can be an unobtrusive player and sometimes you only appreciate his tackles, blocks and extra efforts after re-watching a game. He loves to punch out a handball and he can sit his kicks up, but someone needs to get the ball and Stevens always takes it on himself to do so. He's on the way back from osteitis pubis and has shown plenty of leadership potential.

20. JORDAN GYSBERTS (18, Eastern Ranges, 189cm, 82kg) Like Stevens, Lucas and a few others this year, Gysberts plays a subtle game that at times you don't take in properly while it's unfolding. I'm a big fan and love how he tries to look after his teammates by grabbing the ball and feeding off quick handballs to set them into space. Sometimes I want to see him assert himself a little bit more - perhaps be a little less generous - but maybe that's too picky.

21. BEN GRIFFITHS (18, Eastern Ranges, 199cm, 98kg) Griffiths is a beast - a very big, very strong, imposing key forward - and those types aren't common. The problem is he'll do things that make you think “wow” - take a big contested mark, kick a thumping goal - then get injured in the very next minute. He'll have a shoulder reconstruction this week and that's the query: will he be fixed for good, or take ages to get his body going?

22. NATHAN VARDY (18, Gippsland Power, 198cm, 94kg) There aren't too many ruckmen around this year, but Vardy is the pick of them. He seems to get some good hang time, almost creating time during a ruck contest to place the ball right where he wants it to go. He's quick and agile enough to become useful around the ground - he seems to want the footy - and he can pluck a nice mark.

23. LUKE TAPSCOTT (18, North Adelaide, 180cm, 87kg) Tapscott is a strong-bodied, crashbang midfield/forward who perhaps boasts the best kick in the draft. I'm worried already that I have him too low, but I probably see others as more ready-to-go in a midfield role. That said, he's a player you couldn't allow too much space around the top of the 50, because he'll kick thumping goals.

24. JAKE CARLISLE (18, Calder Cannons, 197cm, 87kg) Carlisle is another to have shown promise at both ends of the ground. He's a nimble, stretchy sort of player who leaps, lunges and seems to relish the small contests-withincontests, like getting to the front of his man or making a spoil when he looks a step too far away. Played cricket seriously until recently.

25. SAM REID (18, Murray Bushrangers, 194cm, 87kg) Reid gets in a smidgen ahead of North Adelaide ruckman James Craig, who has a big leap and lots of oomph. Reid, the brother of Collingwood player Ben, does his job in quieter style, but goes for his marks if they're there and seems diligent and fairly calm, which I like in a defender. He has the speed and endurance to do those things at a higher level.

What type of player are you?
I am a versatile player. I have played in most positions, which offers me the experience in different situations. I consider myself a playmaker who likes to get the ball and create opportunities for others.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
Ryan O’Keefe. He is a creative player who gets a lot of disposals and sets up a lot of forward movement. He also has the ability to play anywhere on the ground.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My strengths are my marking, versatility and endurance. I believe these three aspects are my best assets as a footballer.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
My kicking technique and using my speed. I believe I need to develop my kicking technique and also I don’t use the speed that I have during a game.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I support Melbourne and Richmond. I have barracked for Melbourne all my life as my parents supported them. I’m interested in Richmond because my brother Kelvin plays there.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My father and brother. Dad watches all my games and gives me feedback. I have been lucky enough to watch my brother’s career so far and can learn off his experiences.

You reckon we'll go for best available, or what the club needs?

You reckon we'll go for best available, or what the club needs?
I think best available, we need players that can make an immediate impact and not those that will most likely become guns but need development time. We want this Premiership before our stars/guns retire, so we should go for the Gysberts, Koby Stevens or Bastinac. And if Tapscott is listed as number 23, he might come down to us, doubt it hugely tho...

Um BrisLions how is Majak Daw bigger than Naitanui? He is skinnier and only 194 cm! He plays ruck in the TAC cup because he can jump really high. So where did you get this bigger than Naitnaui stuff from? I really want 1 of Patrick or Daw though! They both look freakish and to have those 2 fellas plus Naitnanui and Jurrah roaming around on the field in the AFL for the next 10 plus years would be super exciting and a major boost for our game!!!

Yeah, I want Patrick as well...freakish skills, Leon Davis like! Apparently we have some competition by North Melbourne and other clubs but they North will probably opt for Jay Mac in the PSD so we'll probably get him if Vossy is serious.
