In their own words: which AFL player do you most resemble and why?

Mitchell Golby:
A cross between Nick Dal Santo and Lindsay Gilbee. Dal Santo because of his neat, left-foot kick and Gilbee because of his run and ability to create from defence.

Josh Dyson:
Nick Dal Santo - ability to run, high possession rate, good reader of the play, good skills by hand or foot and also a good leader.

Amazing some of the talent that gets overlooked. Alex Carey's another one that has missed the ND/PSD/RD. Chances are they'll be a good show next year though with 17 clubs coming in. Look at how long it took Trent Dennis-Lane to get picked up.

Yeah, he had a rookie contract offered by the Redbacks but was waiting to see what came from the draft. Some people had him ranked as high as the late 20s in the ND. I thought he might've given the psd/rookie system a go. Ahh well. At least, unlike a lot of the other kids, he has something to fall back on.

Had a bit of a surf around for Mitch Golby and I reckon he looks like he's gunna be our new JayMac replacement. Can run and rebound out of defence and plays sorta like Leigh Harding...good bench player and is very versatile around the ground. Think he can punch above his weight and play a key position if he needs too as he did a bit for Gippsland. Overall, a good selection, IMO.

BRISBANE LIONS
Graeme Hadley, recruiting manager

Draft summary
"We were probably lucky in that two lads we rated as draftable got through to us at rookie stage as mids - those being young Mitch Golby and Josh Dyson. We certainly rated them well in the draft but couldn't get to them and we were very fortunate, I think, to get to them in the rookie draft.

"They add midfield versatility. One's what you'd describe as a very, very quick offensive mid and the other you would describe as probably a little bit more defensive in his nature. Both confident, both well-skilled and lovely left foot kicks. So they tick all the boxes, each of them in their own way.

"Claye Beams was out of the game for 12 months and he was sort of focussing on his cricket. But I suppose if your brother's doing great things in the AFL, you're pretty keen to get back. Sean Yoshuira had a very good year last year in that he started off in reserves footy and worked his way up to senior football. He's an outstanding to elite stage athlete."

Yep, no Kieran King :(

As for the passing thing, I'd guess it'd be because the club doesn't think the available talent is worth the $'s given we lost money this year... not sure though. They must be happy with the players we currently have. The draft was supposed to be considered shallow, so I guess that is why... which is bullshit because Kal didn't get drafted and he's better than many of those that got picked.

The Brisbane Lions today finalised their entire playing list for 2010 with six selections at the AFL Rookie Draft.

The Lions drafted Gippsland Power midfielder Mitchell Golby (Pick No.16), Eastern Ranges midfielder/forward Josh Dyson (Pick No.32), Irish International Rookie Niall McKeever (Pick No.67), and three Queenslanders in Mt Gravatt teenager Sean Yoshiura (Pick No.74), Labrador product Claye Beams (Pick No.76) and big-bodied Southport ruckman Broc McCauley (Pick No.78).

Yoshiura, Beams and McCauley were taken with the Club's Queensland Priority Selections while McKeever had already signed with the Club as an International Rookie back in June this year.

Lions National Recruiting Manager Graeme Hadley was pleased with the Club's outcome at the AFL Rookie Draft.

"We were keen to top-up our midfielders and believe the handful that we picked up will add great depth to our midfield group," Hadley said.

"We have drafted a combination of inside midfielders and outside midfielders with a blend of pace and toughness."

Mitchell Golby is a creative midfielder/defender who impressed with the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup before injuring his Anterior Cruciate Ligament in the lead-up to the U18 Championships.

"Mitch hurt his knee in a trial game for Vic Country after showing some terrific early season form," Hadley said.

"He's a versatile left-footer who can play as an inside midfielder, outside midfielder and across half-back or half-forward."

"He has a strong and penetrating kick, shows plenty of courage and is an excellent reader of the play."

The Club's second rookie selection Josh Dyson is a well-balanced midfielder/forward who averaged 20 disposals for the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup U18 competition in 2009.

"Josh is a lightning quick outside midfielder or wingman who can also play the role of a quick defensive-type forward," Hadley said.

"He's a very good reader of the play, has great pace and is a beautiful left-foot kick."

Niall McKeever - who hails from Portglenone in Ireland - was a driving force behind County Antrim's unlikely charge at the Ulster Championship in 2009.

He was signed for two years as an International Rookie mid-year and joined his new team-mates for pre-season training in November.

"Niall has all the physical attributes to be a success in the AFL," Lions Football Manager Graeme Allan said.

"He is tall, quick and athletic and we believe he could develop into a quality key defender."

Sean Yoshiura becomes the first ever Japanese-born player to be drafted to an AFL list. He moved with his family to Australia at the age of seven and quickly became involved in Australian Rules football at the junior level.

He was a member of Mt Gravatt's 2009 QAFL Grand Final side and is an elite runner having represented Australia in the 2008 World Schoolboys Championships in the Czech Republic.

"Sean is a lean and developing midfielder who can also play at either half-back or half-forward," Hadley said.

"He played a game with the Brisbane Lions Reserves earlier this year and performed very well."

"He's also an outstanding endurance athlete with a very good athletics pedigree."

The Lions also selected Queenslander Claye Beams who impressed Lions recruiters after featuring in six senior matches for Labrador during the 2009 QAFL season.

Beams was a first-grade cricketer for much of his junior career before switching back to Australian Rules football after watching his brother Dayne play for Collingwood.

"Claye is a very talented all-round sportsperson," Hadley said.

"He played predominantly across half-back in his senior footy this year. His key attributes are his decision-making ability and clean kicking skills."

22 year-old Gold Coast ruckman Broc McCauley is another new Lion with junior experience across a range of sports including soccer, basketball and cricket. He returned to competitive AFL in 2006 and has since been a solid contributor for local club Southport in the QAFL.

In 2009, he represented Queensland, was named in the QAFL Team of the Year, finished equal 7th in the QAFL Grogan Medal and won Southport's Most Improved Player Award.

"Broc is a big, strong and athletic ruckman who also has good speed and endurance for a big guy," Hadley said.

"He is a very powerful player who was one of the dominant ruckmen in the QAFL this year."

Nah...he didn't end up anywhere...pursue a career in Athletics, I think...considering he was a 400m champ in his Division.

Although November’s AFL National Draft remains the primary recruiting tool for all competing clubs, the Rookie Draft is quickly becoming a popular pathway for young footballers to take a second chance at an AFL career.

The Rookie Draft ensures that teenagers that have been overlooked in earlier drafts can still find their way onto an AFL club list while it also allows late developers the opportunity to play at the highest level.

Rookies may not form part of a club’s senior playing list, but there are opportunities for them to be elevated throughout the season and feature in senior matches.

This works to both reward rookies for their continued improvement and provide clubs with some insurance in case they are ravaged by injuries throughout the year.

Whether it is used as an incentive or simply as a list management strategy, there is no doubting that the rookie list system is playing an increasingly larger role in modern-day football.

Each team has enjoyed success in selecting a previously overlooked player in the rookie draft only to see him blossom into one of the team’s key contributors a few years later.

Sydney Captain Brett Kirk was argued to be the best rookie selection of all time in a recent column written on afl.com.au closely followed by Dean Cox (West Coast), Matthew Boyd (Western Bulldogs), Darren Jolly (Sydney), Nathan Bock (Adelaide), Russell Robertson (Melbourne), Tadhg Kennely (Sydney), Nick Maxwell (Collingwood), Brad Sewell (Hawthorn) and Dale Morris (Western Bulldogs).

Add to that list of quality players the likes of Matt Priddis (West Coast), Andrew Lovett (St Kilda), Aaron Davey (Melbourne), Nathan Foley (Richmond), Jason Porplyzia (Adelaide), Ben Rutten (Adelaide), Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle) and Tarkyn Lockyer (Collingwood) and you begin to understand how valuable rookie selections can become.

The Brisbane Lions have enjoyed some great results from players selected in the AFL Rookie Draft.

Dual premiership player Robert Copeland is the most accomplished former rookie in Club history with 143 games while Josh Drummond and Cheynee Stiller are the two most experienced former rookies still currently with the Lions.

A total of 21 rookie-listed players have made a senior appearance with the Lions since the Rookie Draft was introduced in 1997. They are as follows (listed by total matches played):

Robert Copeland (143 games)
Joel Macdonald (80 games)
Cheynee Stiller (67 games)*
Josh Drummond (65 games)*
Jason Roe (50 games)
Scott Harding (48 games)
Colm Begley (29 games)
Trent Knobel (13 games)
Marty Pask (8 games)
Nathan Clarke (6 games)
Marcus Allan (5 games)
Luke Weller (4 games)
Daniel Pratt (3 games)
Pearce Hanley (3 games)*
Will Hamill (3 games)
Scott Clouston (2 games)
Shannon Rusca (2 games)
Travis Baird (2 games)
Leigh Ryswyk (1 game)
Darren Bradshaw (1 game)
Daniel Dzufer (1 game)

*Player still listed with the Club

The most recent Lions rookie arrivals - Mitchell Golby, Josh Dyson, Niall McKeever, Sean Yoshiura, Claye Beams and Broc McCauley - can take confidence in the fact that their opportunity might arise in 2010 or beyond should they impress the Club’s coaching staff while serving their apprenticeship with the Lions Reserves team.

The system has proven a worthy development tool for both players and Clubs over the years. Without it, some of the country’s most talented ‘late developers’ may never have been discovered.

BRISBANE LIONS
Rookie selections:
16 - Mitch Golby (Gippsland Power)
32 - Josh Dyson (Eastern Ranges)
45 - Pass
57 - Pass
67 - Nial McKeever (County Antrim, Ireland - International)
74 - Sean Yoshiura (Mt Gravatt - Qld pre-selection)
76 - Claye Beams (Labrador - Qld pre-selection)
78 - Broc McCauley (Southport - Qld pre-selection)

Despite having eight selections, the Lions used six (including two live picks - Golby and Dyson) and passed on two. Midfielder Beams and mature-age ruckman McCauley were among the most sought after Queenslanders and were able to be pre-listed before the rookie meeting started. Yoshiura, also pre-listed before the rookie draft, is a great story. He becomes the first Japanese-born listed player in the AFL. He is a likely to develop into a run-with midfielder. The Lions added another Irishman with McKeever joining compatriot Pearce Hanley. Midfielders Golby, who was almost taken by the Lions in November, and Dyson were unlucky to be overlooked last month. Golby is a hard-at-it midfielder and Dyson, the nephew of former Demon and Swan Kevin, has been likened to Carlton's Kade Simpson.

Why did we pass on those two?
Were they QLD local selection picks? If they were, then maybe the talent pool was a shallow and we passed it on like the swans. If it wasn't a QLD local selection pick, then I assume that the club didn't want to redraft anybody.
