ANDREW Raines' manager said the defender wanted to leave Richmond because the Tigers left him "rotting" in the VFL. The Tigers told the former Rising Star runner-up it will try to accommodate his request to be traded elsewhere after he told the club he wanted to leave on Monday.

Raines told the club he needed a fresh start, even if new Tigers coach Damien Hardwick wanted him stay.

“(Raines and I) had a chat after he wasn’t selected in the side for Round 22 and Coburg had a bye and he decided he wanted to move on no matter what Damien Hardwick had to say,” Raines’ manager Ricky Olarenshaw told radio station SEN this morning.

Raines has been plagued by knee issues for the past two years and played just three AFL games this season.

Olarenshaw said Raines became dispirited when he couldn’t break into the Tigers’ side in the second half of the year

“Andrew was pretty frustrated throughout the season, particularly the second half when he was fit and rotting away in the VFL.

“I think while Terry was in charge in the first part of the year Andrew had some injury problems … but the second half of the year, when Jade was in charge, he was playing decent footy in the VFL. He’s the sort of guy that plays with passion and is courageous and brave … that’s the sort of guy I though Richmond would have required.

“There’s some criticism about his kicking but at Andrew plays with a bit of passion. He just felt he needed a fresh start (despite a new coach coming to Richmond).”

Olarenshaw said Raines wanted to go home to Queensland and that Brisbane was his first choice - rather than the Gold Coast - because he couldn’t face another year in the VFL.

“That was always in Andrew’s sights – going back to play on the Gold Coast, being a Gold Coast boy – but it’s still 12 months away so he’d have to spend a year in the VFL and I think he’s over doing that, he wants to be playing AFL,” Olarenshaw said.

In other news, the Tigers yesterday announced that star midfielder Brett Deledio had re-signed for another three years.

As the club begins the cleanout of its list, Tigers star Matthew Richardson has also been given a month to go away and consider his future before returning with a decision.
Introduction
The former Richmond defender arrived at the Lions during the 2009 trade period. Throughout his young AFL career, Raines has been somewhat restricted by injury but has certainly proven to be a dashing defender who provides brilliant run from half-back when fit.

Background
• The son of former Brisbane Bear Geoff Raines, Andrew Raines spent most of his junior career playing with local Queensland club Southport in the AFLQ.

• He was drafted to Richmond with their 8th round selection (Pick No.76 overall) in the 2003 AFL National Draft and promptly moved to Melbourne to commence his career.

• After managing just seven matches in his first two seasons at the Tigers, Raines enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2006 when he played all 22 matches and finished Runner-Up in Richmond's Best & Fairest award.

• He also finished Runner-Up in the AFL's Rising Star Award behind Port Adelaide's Danyle Pearce after being nominated earlier in the season. This feat saw Raines recognised as one of the most promising young players in the AFL.

• His breakthrough season of 2006 also earned Raines selection in Australia's International Rules Series side where he spent plenty of time with recently retired Lions star Michael Voss.

• He played all 22 matches and averaged close to 20 disposals the following year in 2007 before injuries limited him to just five matches across both the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

• After two interrupted seasons with the Tigers, Raines sought a new start and was subsequently traded back to Queensland to join the Brisbane Lions in exchange for a third round draft pick.

Vosssy is interested, he wants come back to QLD, we can off load a low draft pick, and pick him up, he is still young was 2nd in NAB rising star a few years (2006) so he cant be that bad. Give him a go.

Only for a 5th rounder or through PSD at best

Butchers the ball far too regularly and we have an excess of HBF

We'll trade Tyler for him ;)

On the Money with that Call when he was playing senior footy the tigers were leaking goals funny that.........Don't waste a pick on him we have the Hawk TeeCee and Bloody Pearce that play the same position he whinging that he is playing VFL at the moment so whats gunna happen when he is firmly entrenched in the Qafl all season next year if we were to pick him up..............One thing remember a few years ago before he signed his current tigers contract we tired to get him to come back to QLD and he shuned us said I wanna stay in Melb for my career................ Piss off Raines I for one do not want a guy like that at our club.

Balony_pony16

I wouldn't worry about the coments as they are just his managers words...he is obviously trying to devalue Raines value on the trade market so he gets his clients wish to return home...I think he has every right to be pissed as it is well known the Rawlings elevated all his mates from the Coburg Tigers once he got the Job, and Raines wasn't in the mates club. From all accounts he was playing very good footy and deserve a place in the seniors...I know that his pre-season form was back to his best. The tigers are a joke!!!!

I think it is great that a QLD'er wants to return home and I ebrace it. This guy has alot of attributes that Voss would love and I think he will fit in well at the Lions. I can See him freeing up adcock from a defensive position to play more midfield.

End of the day Raines has Talent and the lions won't be faced with too many oportunties with a quality young player wanting to return home

We can give the Tigers a very late Rd draft pick...no players!!!! Raines manager is doing a great job de-valuing Raines for us

Balony_pony16
02-09-2009, 09:18 PM
Also, there is also a possibly that Voss can use him up forward and/or through the midfield

I think there may be more then that to his circumstances...I would imagine Injuries and falling on the outer would have played a big part. Ask any tigers supporter and they will say Raines should be playing this season...but he wasn't part of the Coburg mates club.

Plus the tigers cut their older players off and go into a "rebuilding phase" which is enough to jump ship in my eyes...when did the lions go into a rebuilding phase? The tigers will spend the next 2-3 seasons tanking to make up for the horrible drafting they ahve done in the past.

Did carlton say no to judd when he quit the eagles after things got tough at the eagles? I say Raines has seen the light and he brings more toughness into our team.

he will be in our team next season as he will only cost us a late rd draft pick...so start getting to like him! :D

Balony_pony16
02-09-2009, 09:49 PM
Also, we must sent a message out there that any quality QLD'er that wants to return home, that the lions are a great option over the GC. We will forever deal with the go home factor with VIC, SA, & WA boys, and do you think other teams will shy away from recruiting out youngsters? I say lets screw the Tigers after they pushed hard to recruit copeland, charman, Hooper, & I thing adcock...make no mistake they want Raines to stay as they know rawlings stuffed up big time in his player management (hence missing out on the top job, and likely sacking from all/any duties at the tigers), so I say we get one back on them but actually get the player and make him into a star

I think our team is short of at least 3 forwards, so there is movement for change there. We must keep working for a new balance to sort out our lack of scoring options. At the moment adcock & McGrath are stuck in defense as there isn't really anyone that can cover them.

* Sheldon still hasn't cemented a position in the team and will likely end up in the middle
* Adcock can go in the middle again.
* Drummond needs to push further up the ground, and Raines brings alot of run and carry from defense.

I think he can make the senior team...he was the tigers best player this season before getting injured and came 6th in the brownlow in 2006...trust me I have followed this guy for years and he can play.

HF: pok-a-dot, Brown, Sherman
C: Brennan, Black, Drummond
HB: J Mac, Patful, Raines
B: Adcock, Merrett, Hawks

Foll: Clark, Rich, Redden

Int: Risky, Berger, Selwood, TJ

We would still have some flexibility to account for players forms.

The thing with Raines is that he isn't a passenegr and he works hard to get in the game...we seem to have a good handful of players that go missing for long periods of time and raines will have no trouble pushing ahead of selection from those

RICHMOND defender Andrew Raines would prefer to return home to Brisbane to continue his career, but is willing to look at other clubs after telling the Tigers that he wants out.
Raines' management yesterday confirmed that the Tigers had been informed that the defender, who was placed in the NAB Rising Star award in 2006, would be seeking a trade to another club.
Raines' manager Ricky Olarenshaw said that his client, who is out of contract, had a preference for the Brisbane Lions.
''He has stated his preference is to go home to Brisbane, but we haven't spoken to Brisbane yet,'' Olarenshaw said. ''He's open-minded. We'll be talking to other clubs as well.''
Olarenshaw will meet Richmond's football operations chief, Craig Cameron, today to discuss the player's future.
Raines is seeking a trade in the belief that he will get better opportunities at another club, having struggled for a game at Richmond this year even when he returned from injury.
His departure brings the number of post-season retirements or delistings at Tigerland to six, with more expected.
Joel Bowden and Kane Johnson have retired, while fellow veterans Nathan Brown and Mark Coughlan have been cut, along with the club's first draft pick from 2005, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls.

The first trade deal on October 5 will be between Richmond and Brisbane, which has agreed to exchange a third-round national draft selection for Raines, 23, who has not played for the Tigers since round nine. A spate of injuries and a lack of form has contributed to Raines playing just five games over the past two seasons, after he did not miss a senior game in 2006 and 2007.

Lions coach Michael Voss has given his blessing for the exchange involving Raines. West Coast are set to lose up to three out-of-contract players as well as Brent Staker, who has another year of his contract to run with the Eagles.

Totally agree Balones, the bloke gets the nut, he can kick - whoever said he can't has no idea. His decision making is poor & therefore his kicking bcoz he's always under pressure in the last line of a shit team. Next year he plays with Drummo, Jedda, JMac, Patful, Hawk & the superstar McGrath (fuc I luv that man). U reckon he's gonna b under pressure all the time? Dont think so.

It also means McGrath goes further up the field as does Jedda. Next year we have a side 1-2 years away from giving it a real shake.

Yeah I had a long think about this one and when you look at it like that Jed and Ash would play onball abit thus prolonging the careers of Black and Power as the rotations could be Collingwood like we would have a very deep engine room.............O.k now nickname ummmmmm.......Storm Boy welcome to our great club;)

exactly right Jeds...They only way we would get more midfield rotations into adcock was to find a player like adcock himself...Raines is a very similiar backline player to Jeds. Just watch him start returning to form at the lions and watch the Tigers fans stand amused at yet another quality player slip from their graps for nothin

I would rather try and get armitage in a 3 way trade for dalziell...I wonder if the saints would be interested in staker.

In regards to how many players we would take...I can't see how we can knock back a player like Shaun Burgoyne if we can get him. I think Charman will be traded so we will lose a current player and pick up another...Both port & Essendon would love Charman so the lovett & Shaun Burgoyne trade should be a priority as well.

We have alot of passengers (fringe players), so we have room for some senior players. Players like Hooper, Stiller, TJ, Harding, proud, Risky etc arent that important to us, so if we find better replacements then so be it

true...now Burgoyne wants a trade to Vic the power have lost most of their bargaining power. The more I think about it they won't trade pearce as he really isn't going as bad as people think. Pearce is rank 1st at the power and 4th in the AFL for inside 50's...now just imagine him kicking to Brown/Bradshaw. He will take a big trade for the power to trade him.

Yeh its interseting with brock, geez its not like carlton need another mid, which makes the idea of hadley comming to the lions a lot better, you think he would find it hard to play in the mid with so many other players iin front of him.
Collier hopefully he can string some games together and play some some consisitent footy, IMO it is between himself and Hawksley for a defensive bench spot.
The hawk just seemed to get better with everymatch and was playing some really good footy the last couple of matches.

I agree with all that we must look within before going outside TeeCee as Collier is known as here is gunna be a player I think we will see great things from him next year and if everything goes rite for him and he adds weight and has another growth spurt he could hold down CHB no worries as for an onball role he played as a defender his Jnr career and has been groomed as a defender since arriving at the Lions I see where you are going with it but I think JayMac Platts Jed Mcgarth and Drummo would all be filling mid feild roles before TeeCee and thats where Raines comes in.
Raines.................. if he plays senior footy next year it will release one of the above mentioned players thus making our onball stocks deeper add to that improvement in Brennan Rich Redden and Shermo plus the likes of TeeJay Black and Power the redrafting or trade for Hadely and thats 8 guys who can logg big minutes in the middle with Stiller Proud and Selwood pushing for selection it will make us deep and strong.
I too was a bit iffy on Raines but in theoryhe should be a good fit at our club.

spot on...I think carlton have accepted that they will lose hadley...and surely hadley will walk away from the blues after they draft a clone of him

BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss has confirmed that his club has struck a deal with Richmond for defender Andrew Raines.
The Lions have parted with their third-round selection (No.45) in a straight swap for Raines, who has played 56 games since his 2004 debut.
Raines, 23, was limited to just three games in 2009 by knee injuries. He failed to break back into the Tigers ' senior side after round nine. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/85736/default.aspx
Let's welcome ANDREW RAINES to the Brisbane Lions!

He'll free up the attacking defenders such as McGrath and Drummo. But his disposal, he REALLY needs to work on. We haven't lost our second round pick, yet...Sportzo. The details haven't been released yet. All we know is that Staker is coming to us, Dalziell is going to the WCE and Seaby is now officially a Swan. ;)

Jeez, calm down. Thought this was a forum where everyone can express their opinons. GTF over it. I'm happy with the trade. Did you not see his form in 2006? He was awesome! Voss is his coach now, expect some changes.

In other news, omg people are fast with this stuff, his page has already been update on wiki.
Andrew Raines (born 8 March 1986) is an Australian rules footballer, with the Brisbane Lions Football Club.

In a weak draft we are getting better than what we could get for that pick

anyone sudjesting he is a dud doesn't know what they are talking about...he won the B&F a few years back and finished 6th in the brownlow...but since then he has struggled with injuries...once he gets a big pre-season in he will be back to his best.

Exactly. You never know, a new club could/will hopefully turn his career around. Betcha Richmond are hoping he doesn't do a David Rodan on them haha

Raines in his crappy new jumper

Raines excited about fresh start
3:23 PM Wed 23 December, 2009

At the conclusion of the 2006 AFL season, hard-running Richmond defender Andrew Raines was widely considered one of the most exciting young players in the competition.

After managing just seven senior matches in his first two seasons with the Club, the Southport recruit went on to play in every senior match with the Tigers and average 18 disposals per game. His exciting drive from defence earned him second place behind Kane Johnson in Richmond’s Best and Fairest award - the Jack Dyer Medal.

He was also Runner-up to Port Adelaide’s Danyle Pearce in the esteemed AFL Rising Star Award - finishing ahead of fellow young guns Heath Shaw (Collingwood), Marc Murphy (Cartlon), Grant Birchall (Hawthorn) and Dale Thomas (Collingwood).

With a seemingly long and successful AFL career ahead of him, the Tigers had no hesitation in signing Raines to a new three-year deal at the conclusion of his breakthrough 2006 season.

He played every match for the Tigers in 2007 and averaged a career-high 19.4 disposals per game before injuries limited him to just five matches in the following two seasons.

“My left knee kept me out for most of 2008 and I missed pretty much the first half of 2009 with cartilage damage in the same knee,” Raines said.

He returned to the field midway through 2009 but after being starved of opportunities in Richmond’s senior side, decided to change clubs in order to resurrect his AFL career.

The former Queenslander - whose father Geoff played 59 matches with the Bears from 1987-89 - nominated the Lions as his preferred destination and was granted his wish during the off-season trade period.

“I went to Richmond at the end of the season and told them that Brisbane was my preferred destination,” Raines said. “It worked out really well.”

“I saw it as a good opportunity to come up here and play under Michael Voss.”

“The whole structure up here was the most exciting thing for me and the development of my career,” he said.

“I’m just really looking forward to a fresh start in 2010.”

Raines now hopes to remain injury free and recapture that same confidence from two seasons ago.

“You lose your confidence for sure, but it’s more confidence in your body, not really in your ability,” he said.

“I feel like I have gotten some of that confidence back after playing half of last year in the VFL. It certainly helped give me back some continuity in my football.”

“I’ve just got to focus on strengthening the knee up and I will be alright.”

While the speedy half-back hasn’t been given a specific role from new Senior Coach Michael Voss as yet, he believes new opportunities could present themselves at the Lions.

“I probably see myself playing more across half-back and maybe pushing into the midfield - which would be a great opportunity,” he said.

This bloke may be key to next seasons success or otherwise. If he frees up McGrath to play a mid-filed role we have a new mid-filed weapon, a running defender & less pressure on Black/Power. All this said, Richmond believed his decision making under pressure was poor, as was his disposal. Not concerned about either as he was in a side constantly under defensive pressure.
