Brisbane Lions United Medal Winner 2008 There is no player in the competition to have won more accolades than Simon Black – the closest, Chris Judd, only has one premiership medallion to match the Brownlow and Norm Smith. Black has some of the silkiest skills in football. He’s not the biggest, or the fastest, but very few could match him for purity of skill. Taken as a third-round draft pick in 1997, Black was a real steal for the Lions and has matured into one of the key leaders of the post-Voss era.

Black’s 2007 campaign started in scintillating fashion; his form in the first ⅔ of the year was near to career-best, including an equal personal best display of 39 possessions against Hawthorn. He polled 22 Brownlow votes to finish runner-up to Jimmy Bartel. His slow finish to the season cost him the chance to become a dual Brownlow Medallist, though his season was nevertheless extraordinary.

Black has started the 2008 season with aplomb, winning 30 classy possessions against West Coast in round 1. With skills like his, there is no limit to what he can accomplish. Added to this is his value around the club as a mentor for the younger players. Truly a champion – and a very nice person too – he is the real deal.
Introduction
Simon Black is one of the most decorated players in our merged Club’s history having achieved almost every individual honour in the game. His silky skills, leadership, durability and ball winning abilities keep him among the competition’s elite midfielders.

Background
• Black was born in Mount Isa in Queensland – the same birthplace of fellow sports stars Greg Norman and Pat Rafter – before his family settled in Perth.

• He was a standout junior 800m and 1500m runner as a junior and competed several times at national level.

• He joined East Fremantle Football Club and represented Western Australia in the 1997 U18 Championships where he earned All-Australian honours.

• Despite being widely tipped as a first round prospect, Black was drafted by the Brisbane Lions with selection No.31 in the 1997 National Draft.

1998
• Black was impressive during the pre-season and earned his senior debut in Round 1 against the Bulldogs at the Gabba.

• He played nine senior matches and averaged over 12 disposals during his debut season and took out the Club’s Best First Year Player award.

1999
• Black consolidated himself as an automatic senior selection and built a reputation for winning the ball in contested situations.

• He collected 20 possessions and kicked two goals against Geelong in Round 9 which earned him an AFL Rising Star Nomination. He ultimately finished third in the award behind Sydney’s Adam Goodes and Adelaide’s Brett Burton.

• He played a remarkable 22 matches and averaged close to 19 disposals.

• The West Australian claimed the Attitude Barometer award (Full Ground) and won the Lions Rookie of the Year award for the second consecutive season after club officials changed the selection criteria to fall in line with the AFL’s Rising Star award.

• His breakthrough season ended on a sour note when he suffered a fractured eye socket five minutes into the Preliminary Final loss to North Melbourne at the MCG.

• He was awarded nine votes in the Brownlow Medal – more than highly fancied team-mates Michael Voss and Jason Akermanis.

2000
• Black continued his evolution into an elite midfielder by finishing equal seventh in the Club Champion voting despite missing four matches with a broken hand.

• He averaging 23.9 disposals, led the competition in centre clearances on a per game basis and finished second behind Geelong’s Garry Hocking in hard-ball gets.

2001
• Black played every match from the start of the pre-season competition through to the Grand Final, leading the AFL in tackles and averaging a team-high 24.6 possessions.

• He was an integral member of the Lions’ breakthrough premiership win, was joint Club Champion with Captain Michael Voss and was named as the starting ruck-rover in the All-Australian team.

• He finished 5th in the AFLPA's Most Valuable Player voting behind Andrew McLeod, Michael Voss, Ben Cousins and Brett Ratten.

• Black also won a $39,000 car as the Herald Sun Player of the Year and figured in the top 10 in countless other media awards.

• He was expected to poll many more than his 12 votes in the Brownlow Medal after entering the count as one of the top fancies with the bookies.

• He represented Australia for the first and only time during the off-season as part of the International Rules Series against Ireland.

2002
• Black established himself among the true champions of the game by helping lead his team to its second consecutive premiership in his 100th AFL match.

• He collected 22 possessions in the Grand Final against Collingwood despite receiving a heavy tag from Scott Burns.

• He collected a whopping 583 possessions from 25 games and earned All-Australian selection for the second consecutive season.

• Comparisons between him and dual Brownlow Medallist Greg Williams began to surface because of his outstanding peripheral vision and ability to get the contested ball.

• He won the game’s most coveted individual honour – the Brownlow Medal – when he polled 25 votes to beat Port Adelaide’s Josh Francou (21) and skipper Michael Voss (17).

• Black, Voss and Jason Akermanis made more history on Grand Final day by becoming the first trio of awarded Brownlow Medallists to play in a premiership team together.

• He was awarded his second Merrett-Murray Medal – making him only the sixth player ever to win back-to-back best and fairest awards in back-to-back premiership years. He was also the sixth man in the history of the VFL/AFL to win the Brownlow and Club Champion award in a premiership year.

2003
• Black continued his sublime football career by averaging over 24 disposals in a year the Lions made history by winning their third consecutive premiership.

• He finished just one vote behind Michael Voss in the Club Champion award and was considered unlucky not to have been selected in the AFL All-Australian team.

• He was outstanding throughout the 2003 Finals Series and finished the season with one of the great Grand Final performances in recent history. Collingwood simply had no answer Black who collected a career-best 39 possessions – the most by any player in a Grand Final – and was duly rewarded with the Norm Smith Medal.

• With two Club Champion awards, a Brownlow Medal and Norm Smith Medal among his trophy collection, Black had the distinction of being one of the most decorated players in the game by the ripe old age of 24

2004
• Black claimed his third All-Australian honours following another outstanding season which saw him play every match and averaged 23.6 possessions.

• So highly was the Brownlow Medallist rated, that Port Adelaide’s 2004 pre-Grand Final planning was spent on trying to shut him down with specialist tagger Kane Cornes.

• Black was booked for striking during the Grand Final loss and, despite having never been reported before throughout his career, was subsequently suspended for three matches. The suspension broke a remarkable sequence of 107 consecutive matches dating back to 2000.

• He finished third overall in the Club Champion award – his fourth consecutive ‘podium’ finish.

2005
• Black’s season started three games late due to his suspension following an incident in the 2004 Grand Final but the interruption did nothing to curb his influence in his first game back – collecting 26 possessions against Hawthorn in Round 4.

• He remained at his consistent best and was a driving force behind the team’s mid-season turnaround which saw the Lions win five straight matches and seem a legitimate finals contender.

• However, a corked calf restricted him in the latter stages of the season as the Lions missed finals for only the second time since Black arrived in 1998.
2006
• Having overcome his injuries which hampered much of 2005, Black played every match and averaged 24 disposals per game.

• He exuded greater leadership qualities when faced with playing in the midfield without the likes of Michael Voss, Jason Akermanis and Nigel Lappin who were absent at times throughout the season.

• He made 30 more clearances, gathered 100 more loose-ball gets and had twice as many hard-ball gets over the season than any of his team-mates. He laid the most tackles at the Club as well.

• It came as no surprise that Black won his third Merrett-Murray Medal among other awards at the Club Champion dinner.

2007
• Black’s leadership qualities were formalised at the beginning of 2007 when he was named one of the four Lions Co-Captains following the retirement of skipper Michael Voss.

• He collected an equal career-high 39 disposals against Hawthorn in the opening round of the season and firmed considerably for the Brownlow Medal after the first dozen games.

• He was sublime in his 200th AFL match and earned three Brownlow votes for his performance despite the fact that his team were comfortably defeated by Collingwood at the Gabba.

• He played 21 of a possible 22 matches, averaged over 22 disposals per game, finished equal fifth in the Club’s Best & Fairest and took home the Lions’ Best Midfielder award.

• Black was also afforded the honour of being inducted as a Life Member of the Club having completed ten sensational seasons.

• He continued to attract the attention of the umpires and finished equal Runner-up in the Brownlow Medal behind Geelong’s Jimmy Bartel.

2008
• Black’s 11th season was arguably one of his finest – which seems absurd considering his previous decade of outstanding performances.

• He averaged a career-best 25.7 disposals per game and only collected fewer than 20 touches only twice in his 21 matches.

• After a blistering start to the season which saw him firm in Brownlow Medal betting, Black missed the team’s Round 7 clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium due to a groin complaint. The injury also meant he was unable to represent the ‘Dream Team’ in the AFL’s Hall of Fame Tribute match the following week at the MCG.

• A 36 disposal performance against Melbourne during the ANZAC Round at the Gabba earned him the Club’s Sands of Gallipoli Medal for best afield – one of the few accolades that he had not previously received.

• He led the Club in contested possessions, hard ball gets, clearances and handballs despite struggling for much of the season with a groin injury.

• For the second consecutive season, Black finished Runner-up in the Brownlow Medal – only one vote shy of Western Bulldog midfielder Adam Cooney.

• He finished Runner-up in a tight race for the Club’s Best and Fairest award behind fellow Co-Captain Jonathan Brown – yet took home the Courier Mail Player of the Year award and the Club’s Best Midfielder award.

• When team-mate Jonathan Brown was chosen as sole Captain at the end of 2008, Black was selected as one of four Club Vice-Captains alongside Luke Power, Jed Adcock and Daniel Merrett.
2009
• Black suffered some injury setbacks during the pre-season (ankle surgery and a broken hand) which forced him to miss the Club's opening match of the season against the West Coast Eagles.

• The incredibly durable and consistent midfielder returned by Round 2 and went on to play the remainder of the season (23 matches) at his natural high quality level.

• Black averaged a near personal best 25.4 disposals throughout the season - including a season-high 37 touches in Round 20 against the Western Bulldogs - and was regularly among the teams best players.

• He was one of few contributors in the team's 93-point loss to Geelong in the Club's annual ANZAC Round which earned him his second consecutive Sands of Gallipoli Medal.

• He became only the 11th player in Club's 113-year history to reach 250 games with the Lions in Round 18 against Collingwood. Unfortunately he didn't receive the fairytale finish as the Magpies triumphed by 40 points.
• Arguably his finest performance of the season was in the Semi Final against Carlton when - despite carrying a strained hamstring into the match - he led his side into the second week of the AFL Finals. It was a typical warrior-like performance from the Lions champion.
• He once again led the Club in key stats categories such as contested possessions, hard ball gets and clearances.

• His feats were recognised by the umpires at the 2009 Brownlow Medal where he finished equal fourth with team-mate Jonathan Brown behind eventual winner Gary Ablett. It was the third consecutive year that Black had finished in the top five of the AFL's highest individual honour.

• He finished Runner-up in the Club Champion award behind Captain Jonathan Brown for the second consecutive season but also took home the Courier Mail Player of the Year award (for the fourth time) and the Lions Players' Player of the Year award which was voted by his team-mates. http://www.lions.com.au/players/playerprofile/simonblack/tabid/5189/playerid/13986/category/senior/season/2009/selected/bio/default.aspx

Simon Black is an absolute legend. He's super consistent and always racks up the posessions, Being a lefty helps increase his talent too. :P

Norm Smith medalist in 2003 GF and collected 39 posessions that match.

Always seems to break most taggers. Kane Cornes is probably the one that shuts him down most from memory.

A rarely injured man which is also superb.

1999 Premlinary Final Black was taken out intentionally because he was going to help us win the game. He copped a fractured eye-socket which required an immediate visit to the hospital.

Black came so close to the Brownlow last season. He's worth putting money on again.

Black was the first mid field goal kicker I have seen in a while. I think with Power and Adcock our midfield did well with the goal kicking.

The first couple rounds I saw Black trying hard to kick a goal. He finally made one on Friday night.

He's deadset one of the nicest guys I've ever met. The first time I met him was when I was at a club function with my then-girlfriend who didn't follow or enjoy football (we're no longer together). He was such a gentleman with her even though she clearly was a bit nonplussed about the whole thing.

That's really great. It must be hard sometimes being nice and polite to all these people when you just want to go home and put the feet up. But with Simon, you never feel like you've got less than his full attention.

Confirmed that Black has Osteitis Pubis, early stages. He'll be carefully managed.

christicehurst
04-05-2008, 01:35 PM
That's bad news, how long will he last for the season?

the_champ33
04-05-2008, 08:03 PM
Thankfully the club medical staff have caught it early, however a timetable return is difficult with this injury.

Early scenariro which Simon has is simply rest and access. This can sometimes be 4, 6 or 8 weeks later.

Worst case option is always surgery.

It's really wait and see material unfortunately.

Our midfield looks a bit weak without Black and Johnstone especially talking experience wise.

christicehurst
04-05-2008, 09:04 PM
So he's out of the game until it's healed. No reduced time such as playing for three quarters or even half a game?

the_champ33
04-05-2008, 09:20 PM
No I doubt it, this will just aggrovate the injury a lot more and make it worse. This will also cause the need for more surgery.

As I said before, if detected early, it's simply a matter of resting and accessing.

If it was finals time, he might be able to play through it, but it gets worse.

Brown played with it a few years ago and it only gets worse. This is one injury you'd prefer to avoid and never experience.

It's basically inflamation of the pubic bone.

Spanner
05-05-2008, 05:14 PM
If it was Round 20, 21, 22 - Black would play. He'd just be uncomfortable through the week. You'd play them through it and then get surgery through the off season. But this early, your best bet is rest.

christicehurst
05-05-2008, 10:10 PM
Rest would be the key. Let's hope he will return soon.

the_champ33
06-05-2008, 09:23 AM
osestis-pubis is an injury you can't mess around with. It'll probably be best to rest and ease him through until finals time. During finals he can play with pain and discomfort.

the_champ33
29-05-2008, 07:33 AM
He's always a smokey for the Brownlow. I'm spewing I didn't waste money on him last year as he finished 2nd or 3rd.

I placed Brownlow money on him this year @ the start of the season when he was @ odds of $26. The recent good form has seen him drop to as low as $9.

I'm hoping for a pay out after the Brownlow.

the_champ33
29-05-2008, 07:35 AM
When I played footy in 2001, I wore jumper #20 because of Simon Black. Every week in the lockeroom I made sure to make it my number and always said "Simon Black will be a superstar". How correct I have been, yet he's still under-rated by opposition @ times. However the retirements of Vossy etc have given him more attention since.

I started to admire Black from season 1999 which was Lethal's first year as coach. The love and admiration has taken off since.

With the MSB coming up, it may be wise after last night to give Simon a rest for the next game and the week after that to manage his OP.

the_champ33
22-06-2008, 09:18 PM
True. Seeing him receive treatment last night to the right groin caused concern. We need Simon for the long run and finals. Thankfully we have depth to cover. Brennan might get another midfield opportunity to captalise on last nights form

See what the club do. Maybe recovering since post-game til this weekend could turn out to be fine.

Spanner
24-06-2008, 07:33 PM
Maybe, but the nature of OP is to flare up like that and generally, rest is the only treatment. We're well placed at the moment in that we can give Black two weeks rest while only missing one game, and not what you'd call a crunch game at that.

24-06-2008, 07:39 PM

To have him right for finals, he has to be properly managed through the home and away season.

the_champ33
25-06-2008, 08:46 AM
That might mean the stationery handball drills during the main training sessions. Vossy had to do it because his knees were that bad. Browny and others go through the phase.

We have some of the best medical staff and advice going around. Black shall be nursed. Lethal isn't stupid and knows Black is a key required player. They won't risk Black.

Past and present players under the Lethal era can vouch for it.

I've been saying that since 2001.

the_champ33
27-06-2008, 03:29 PM

One of the best and smoothest handballs I've ever seen.

27-06-2008, 04:00 PM
He would have to be one the best in and under clearance players there are...
You never think that he has 30+ possessions almost every game because so many of them are contested, under the pack handballs which result in clearances.

the_champ33
27-06-2008, 04:12 PM
The other thing that baffles me is his lack of injuries over the many years considering his regular in and under play and always on the ball.

We deserve a finals match based on the fact to prove to supporters we are on the right track. Give the young players whatever experience they can muster out of a finals game. Give them a taste of it, only a little and they play harder next year.

brandon

Me, I'll say it. LOL.
We just lost to Melbourne and Essendon... That's not a side that can win games come finals time.

Hopefully we get back on track next week.

Black is doing the hard work, but he isn't being rewarded by his disposal. Maybe the OP is part of that...

brandon
12-07-2008, 10:04 PM
look its oveas the whole team isnt 100% at the moment

alot of injury is amongst the club

but if we can win about 2 of our next 3 games it sould be able to put us in a posiion to consolidate our spot in the 8

and maybe by that time our big name player will be back to 100%

Spanner
13-07-2008, 04:43 PM
It seems pretty obvious that Simon's OP is really affecting his disposal at the moment. But to call his game last night terrible is a massive overstatement. He was good, he just wasn't Simon Black brilliant. But good is a long way from terrible.

How will we nurse him during the rest of the season. Someone here suggested to stick him in the forward line.

worbsy
13-07-2008, 05:05 PM
I reckon the only spot for Black is in the middle, in the contests. He always takes the best opposition tagger when he's in the middle, freeing up Power, Johnstone, Adcock, etc. a bit. We don't want to lose that.

He's tough and has played with it all year, so I don't see why anything would need to change, unless it gets worse.

the_champ33
13-07-2008, 09:11 PM
Black must remain in the midfield and keep doing what he does best. We just have to manage him and nurse him after that. He is playing hurt and hopefully it won't flare up badly that he has to be sidelined.

Didn't he hurt his shoulder last night?

christicehurst
13-07-2008, 09:18 PM
That's the problem, no one can replace him in the midfield so we have to put up with the injury and see how it fares.

the_champ33
14-07-2008, 10:55 AM
I read his shoulder injury is ac joint related which could mean anything. Definitely require surgery at some stage though

worbsy
14-07-2008, 04:00 PM
He'll be a sore boy this week. I'm kind of expecting him to miss this week. And Dalziell/Proud to come in.

Harding maybe?

worbsy
14-07-2008, 11:40 PM
Dalziell for me.

christicehurst
15-07-2008, 09:14 AM
Proud or Dalziell two good choices.

worbsy
15-07-2008, 02:46 PM
I think both should play personally. Proud has earned his spot all year, no doubt. Dalziell, I just wanna see him play, but he's been doing very well in the reserves too.

Those numbers in the WAFL have got me hopeful with Dalziell.

Awesome name too.

christicehurst
15-07-2008, 03:29 PM
Both would be great but I'm not unsure about what Leigh will do if Black is out for this week.

worbsy
15-07-2008, 03:48 PM
I reckon out of Brown and Black, Black is the one I would least expect to play, even though that corked hip Browny got was a shocker. The fact that Black is battling OP as well as injuring a shoulder makes him pretty unlikely to play from where I sit.

the_champ33
15-07-2008, 03:56 PM
I feel the same way

worbsy
17-07-2008, 12:36 PM
injuryupdate.com estimates him and brown to play this week, and it's generally pretty accurate. Hope both get up, I reckon they'll both be named to play, but Black may be a late withdrawal.

the_champ33
17-07-2008, 03:52 PM
I expect Brown to play and Black to withdraw.

worbsy
17-07-2008, 04:31 PM

I'm not too fussed. It can give Black a rest with his long term OP.

the_champ33
18-07-2008, 12:52 PM
True, but the hard Gabba surface doesn't help and he's a natural on-baller. It will still bite sometime, still a week off will make a difference.

Blacky is one of the players I look up to the most. He is fair but hard playing. If he does do something wrong that the umpy gets him for, he won't step over the mark or go off at the umpy. He isn't one to get into fights. He isn't one to get caught in 'mischief' on or off the field. As far as I know he is nice to supporters. He likes his time without the camera's around him. This is difficult for anyone of his calibre. He isn't often in the limelight, only really when he finally gets recognaised with an award. You don't see him in the news that often, except on big wins and just think he is a Norm Smith Medallist, Brownlow Medallist, 3 Time Premiership Player............

Yeah, I was surpised when I read it, but then I thought about it and now that Charmo and Brown have both settled down, we aren't a very phsyically aggressive side now, outside of tackling.
tackling fairly though :)

Brown still scares just with his presence as does Charmo what we need is for one Jay Sherman to lose the "Man Tan" and man the F up and belt someone well good hip and shoulder with there head over the ball cop a couple of weeks so the guy he is taggin each week is then in two minds when attacking the ball.
This might sound a little unsportsman like but if any one can recall the game in 07 Vs the doggies Jed deadset smashed Ryan Griffen he did his ACL in the tackle and gets done for holding the ball...... in the replay in slow mo you see Jed can see griffen is hurt and he doesn`t cough the ball straight up but Jed just grabs him picked him up and smashed back down it was so brutal we need to do shit like that more the hawks do and get away with it so why don`t we try?

I'm a big fan of Griffen so I didn't like seeing him get injured. But if we can legally hurt someone that's tearing us apart, like Judd, I won't complain :)

Black copped 3-games in the 2004 GF for striking + he missed games anyway due to an ankle injury.

Before that he copped a fine once for participation in a melee Vs Essendon. Instead of breaking it up, he joined in, which was rare that day.

Otherwise Black is a clean fair player. Never abuses or yells @ an umpire

Didn't he get charged with kicking somebody in a pub brawl last year or the year before? Along with Voss, Steve Lawrence and someone else that I can't remember...

NEW Lions coach Michael Voss has suffered the first setback of his debut campaign with ball magnet Simon Black succumbing to an ankle injury.
The 2002 Brownlow medallist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Black) and last year's runner-up initially suffered the injury last year and had hoped off-season rest would solve the problem.

But the ankle has become sore during heavy November training and Black had to undergo minor surgery on Monday. He is expected to miss up to six weeks of running and will not be available to resume full training until the side re-convenes in January after a short break over Christmas.

It is the second year surgery has caused Black to miss a large chunk of the summer workload but, as he showed in his stellar 2008 season, he is capable of producing elite-level performances on limited preparation.

Black remains Brisbane's best midfielder and the key to their finals fortunes.

Spearheads Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw are both coming off superb seasons, but both rely on the hard ball Black routinely wins from the midfield.

Black recently told The Courier-Mail he had found the training regime under new coach Michael Voss as tough as any he had ever done, but was stimulated by some of the new exercises his former premiership-winning captain had introduced.

The AFL has granted the Lions permission for Nick Davis to continue training with the side, but they have yet to decide whether to invite the former Swan back for another block of pre-season after this week's boot camp on Couran Cove.

Brisbane has not sought AFL approval for fallen Eagle Ben Cousins, who's last shot at resurrecting his career appears to be through joining the Lions in next month's pre-season draft, to train with the side.

A injury to Black but shouldn't cut his season.

He had OP all year and came 2nd in the Brownlow, so I don't see it as being too much of a problem. Of course Lappin's 'road to retirement' started with an ankle injury.

Vossy has come out and said that Blacky rolled it during a training drill. The medicos say it's nothing serious, but that he needs rest. He arrived at Training the afternoon, though he is on a light training regime.

I do not see him playing to the final rounds of the Nab cup which is good cause he will be fresher at the seasons end.........blacky has been our fittest for a few years now well untill some guy called Bradd came along, but anyway he has a great fittness base so i do not see the point in flogging him over the summer lost of surfing would be good for him.

Surfing wouldn't be the best idea at this time. Gets smashed by a wave and could break his other ankle or his arm or leg.

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK

THE BRISBANE Lions are reeling after scans revealed premiership midfielder Simon Black suffered a broken hand at training on Monday night.

A club spokesman confirmed that Black had been ruled out for four to six weeks – which includes the Lions' entire NAB Cup campaign.

However, the expected lay-off suggests that the 29-year-old will be ready for the season opener against the West Coast Eagles on March 28.

Black was named as one of four vice-captains to Jonathan Brown in December, soon after he required minor surgery to an ankle injury that hampered his start to pre-season training.

He was then kept him from running at full pace in the lead-up to Christmas.

Black enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2008, pushing through groin soreness to finish second to Western Bulldog Adam Cooney in the Brownlow Medal count.

He won the award in 2002.

The Lions are currently preparing for next Saturday's pre-season clash with St Kilda on the Gold Coast and, under new coach Michael Voss, are searching for their first finals berth since 2004.

Just Fuck

On the flip side, he'll be playing in Round, so I don't reckon it's anything serious. It will rule him out of the NAB Cup though.

There are no guarantees he'll be playing rd 1, Scotty. It says "the expected lay-off suggests that the 29-year-old will be ready for the season opener", and the term 'suggests' can't be taken as fact.

Lets think about this Blacky will be able to run so it will be okay as long as he is back by RD4 we should be fine the team showed last year that they could match it with an elite team minus Blacky Vs Geelong Rd5 I thinks.................. so other players should step the fuck up and carry the load Blacky has been for years.............he aint gunna be round forever so its time the likes of Jed,Risky,Selwood, and Proud (this will be the year he breaks loose)to start really shouldering the load in the middle............I think Blacky is the greatest player running around in the game I am not being biast but can anyone name a player who has done what he has in his career and is still playing? no Juddy is the only one who can come close He has the B&f`s he has the brownlow he has the norm smith but Blacky has 2 more flags Goodesy could have been but the swans won`t make it back to the promise land for many a moon................I guess what I am trying to say is don`t worry It is Blacky the great man will not let a broken hand slow him down trust me.:)
P.S I think he has done enough and is that valueable that why waste him in the nab the guy only knows how to play at one speed FLATOUT let him have his rest and save for the hame and away season and of course the finals.;)

I couldn't have said it better Jedda. That is all so bloody true. Blacky is arguably the best mid in there at the moment. So close to a second Charlie (with a team that didn't make the finals :( .....) proves he hasn't lost his touch. It's time for the boys to step up. Now. Finger, Blacky, Big Guns and Browny won't be around forever.

Due to the injuries experienced this pre season and hitting 30, I am worried and concerned if we'll start seeing more injuries from this key player.

Also on a betting point of view I am afraid to put money on him for the Brownlow right now due to these injuries. I'll sit and wait on this one.

Still an awesome player though

b_lions16
01-03-2009, 06:50 PM
He's right for Round 1...but he's suffered injury in the past and still has managed to pull a great season. He's mighty underrated like Patful, I reckon. He's 8th on the Brownlow Betting @ $26 behind Ablett, Judd, Franklin, Brown, Bartel, Cooney and Pavlich.

the_champ33
01-03-2009, 06:57 PM
It was those same odds that cost me 1 vote and a pay out in 2008.

2007 was a year I could and should have slapped the money down and didn't. Another close year.

I'm a little concerned now with the age now and given he's always been in the midfield and never really rested forward like others.

b_lions16
01-03-2009, 06:58 PM
He's copped the hardest tag week in, week out. So he's been doing quite well finishing 2nd in the Charlie 2 years in a row. But Ablett will absolutely DOMINATE the Brownlow Voting, so I'll probably hit the cash down for him. ;)

brisbanelions4life
01-03-2009, 10:30 PM
Blacky is the powerhouse of the midfield. he cops the hardest tag, has to cope with injury and can still rack em up like anyone else. Still got heaps left in the tank, wont be losing his best, anytime soon.

b_lions16
02-03-2009, 08:18 AM
He'll never leave the Lions...untouchable. ;) Pushing for 3 years, he is, and is one of footy's MOST underrated. He cops the hardest tag, explaining the times he gets missing in games, but he racks 'em up like a champ, rocks it like a champ, and is a champ. :)
